The most evil character I've recently seen was the Swede, in the Hell on Wheels series. I agree with JME regarding Henry Fonda in Once Upon the Time in the West, a classic.

Spinoff from the Harry Potter thread. What movie characters are your favorite villains?

Some of my thoughts off the top of my head. With time I could probably come up with some more. I'm not into slasher movies, so characters such as Freddie Kruger won't make my list.
  • Robert Mitchum as Reverend Harry Powell in Night of the Hunter. (Hard to imagine a more chilling character.)
  • Alan Rickman as Hans Gruber in Die Hard.
  • Kathleen Turner as Matty Tyler Walker in Body Heat.
  • Ricardo Montalban as Khan in Star Trek !!.
  • Gian Maria Volanté as El Indio in For a Few Dollars More. (Thought about Lee van Cleeve as Angel Eyes in The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, but I had to go with El Indio as the more despicable. The psychology of the musical watch is just more compelling.)
  • Delores Umbridge from the Harry Potter movies. With Voldemort, there is some reason to understand his evil, and the evil that he does usually (but not always) has some purpose. Delores Umbridge is simply nasty because of the psychological pleasure she derives from being nasty.

And in Die Hard with a Vengeance - Jeremy Irons and Sam Phillips

Khan Noonien Singh was an interesting character. In The Space Seed, he was the product of a eugenics war. He was bred to be a leader. According to the backstory:
Wiki said:
Khan had been both the most successful conqueror and the most benign ruler of the group, ruling more than a quarter of the Earth's area across Asia to the Middle East from 1992 to 1996 with a firm but generally peaceful hand until he was deposed.

After he and his group was placed (or marooned) on Ceti Alpha V., he blamed Kirk for not checking back on them. I would say, that was a legitimate gripe.

While he had all his appendages, he had been transformed into Ahab and Kirk was his White Whale. After he escaped the planet, he did not slaughter the crew of the USS Reliant, but stranded them on the planet. He did torture and kill the scientists on the Space Station on Regula I because they stood in the way of his goal, Genesis and ultimately Kirk.

As I have previously stated, I'm a big fan of Japanese Anime. One of the reasons is that in many of the stories, the "villain" is being driven by conflicting goals and they take the time to present the view from the alternate side. Big, complex stories.

Khan was doing only what Khan COULD do, it could be argued that he was mad and had no free will. This is MUCH different than The Joker's madness which is driven by his desire for mayhem.

Ricardo Montalban loved the role as Khan. For the sequel, they wanted to use makeup and prosthetics to give him his sculpted body. But he went in training and did most of the body sculpting himself.

Tiffany Case: "That looks fantastic! What's in it?"
Mr. Wint: "But then there would be no 'surprise', would there, madame?"
