I have never rented a modem from my cable company. But if you do rent a cable modem from your cable company and you want to save some money, I recommend you check with your cable company and see what manufacturer and model numbers are compatible with your cable provider. There are differences between models and you can save time if you use one that is recommended as compatible by your cable provider. As far as saving money, in my experience a cable modem will last as long as 6-8 years before it needs replacing. $8.00 a month times 12 months is $96.00. 7 years times $96 is $672. If you spend $100 on your modem, your savings is $572 over the 7 years. That is real money.

I, also, have never rented a cable modem (or "gateway").
You can use your own router, too. No reason to pay them for it.
There is a page on the Cox website which lists compatible equipment.
It's not easy to find, but it's there.

We use a Comcast box both voice and wi-fi. The article finally prompted me to replace it with this:

I assume that anyone who has Comcast/ Xfinity KNOWS to use a Roku stick (or any model Roku device) on their other TVs instead of supplemental boxes. I save $30/ month when I switched from their boxes to Roku sticks on my 3 bedroom TVs at my shore home. The Xfinity App on Roku gets you all live TV channels just as on your cable box.

Some TV's have Roku built in and the Xfinity App works on them too. The only cable going to my latest TV is the power cord.

As I discovered today, the Xfinity app for Roku will not work with anything except an Xfinity provided gateway. :( The app says it won't work unless it is connected to an Xfinity wifi. It doesn't recognize a Xfinity compatible gateway.

I did this with Firesticks instead of the Roku. But basically gets rid of any supplemental boxes. I live by myself but have 4 tvs (MBr, Guest BR, Living Room, Office). Don't want or need to be paying for those boxes. Use xfinity app from my firestick when I travel too, I can always access my DVR content that way. But live TV depends on market or area I assume, because I sometimes can get live TV at hotels or timeshares, but not always.
