I was wondering if anyone can give me info on public traportation available to Xcaret and Xel-ha from Grand Mayan Riviera Maya. We want to stay for late show in Xcaret... Is it difficult to catch bus/van after late show? Should we just join the tour? I was thinking about joining entertainment-plus but it is so much more than ticket itself...

to and from Xcaret

It's been a few years but when we were in Mexico I was too cheap to pay the rate to take the bus to Xcaret. We easily took a local van there in the morning and they actually ran a shuttle from the highway to the gate. After the show though there were absolutely no vans stopping outside Xcaret. (I'm sure they do it to give taxis business) ANyways after turning down several taxis we realized there was no other way back so we arranged to share a taxi with another couple. Still way cheaper than the package deal offered through our hotel. I loved Xcaret especially the river float and the evening show.
Enjoy
Joan

Thank you so much for your info... I guess taxi will not work for us then since we have 6 people. I was hoping to find van or bus afterwards... Is that same for Xel-ha?

Both of these places are geared to touring. Most people simply book a tour and go to either one. They make it very difficult to do anything else. Xcaret would be my choice, for the day, especially if you take in the supper show. You can also make reservations to have dinner while watching the show if you would like to do that. I have never noticed any public transportation. The closest would be in Playa del Carmen. Then you would still have to taxi in and out. This would be quite troublesome. You could rent a car at your hotel and go there for the day. I did this once. The trip there in the day was fine. I thought it would be a problem at night, but there are so many busses to follow out it turned out OK. The main highway Mex. 307 is 4 or 6 lanes in places and well lite. The other option is to book your own 8 passenger van at the Grand Mayan. They usually hang out with the taxi guys. Make a deal to drive you out and pick you up at a certain time and in a certain place. Money talks in Mexico. Anything is possible. I think everything is over by 9 pm. It is very busy when the place closes, so even stay together with your friends as you leave.

be prepared for lots of walking at Xcaret. We stayed at the adjacing property (forget the name right now). We did a ton of walking & it was diffcult for a 4 year old.

We loved the underground water tunnel thing. Although it did scare the 4 year old and we had to get out before the end. We should have just done it the rest of the way. Getting out of the river before the end made even more walking.

We stayed at the Grand Mayan - Riviera Maya and booked the Xcaret tour at the resort. It was all day and included the show at night. It was an awesome tour and I would put Xcaret at the top of my list of things to do and see in the area.

How much did you pay for tour from GM? Also, does anyone know how much to pay a private van driver for roundtrip to Xcaret?

To be honest, I really do not remember how much it was. We booked the tour to Chichen Itza at the same time. I think the total for both tours for the two of us was somewhere around $325.00. The XCaret tour was the cheapest so it was probably about $140 for the 2 of us. It was an all day tour that picked you up at the Grand Mayan and brought you back to the resort and lasted from about 8:00 am until 10:00 pm. It included the park, a great buffet lunch ( very good ) and the evening show. I am sorry that I cannot be more specific but I really do not pay a lot of attention to the price.

You can do an on-line search for Xcaret tours and you will see all kinds of deals.

Please check www.xcaret.com.mx for information. Also www.graylinecancun.com offer tours to Xcaret for about $67 usd per person for entrance fee plus transport. Shop around the day you get there. I did mention a van, usually the taxi companies will post a sign at the resort indicating the fare to different places. You can get a good basic reference with that...our simply ask the door man, or the hotel desk, they will tell you the score. Just ask the door man. Tell him what you want to do, believe me, it will be done.

tours are too much

I know this post is old, but I would like to add to it for anyone that needs info and is heading to cancun. The tours were way to rich for my blood. The tour of XelHa and Tulum were about $90 per person. So, $360 for 4 people. We rented a car and went into the Tulum ruins for like $2 each and XelHa was super cheap too. Plus, we were on our own and didnt have to spend additional time at one or the other if we didnt want to. The freedom was well worth it. I am sure you can meet some other folks at your resort that are looking for a cheap alternative to the tours, so why not car pool and split the costs.
