Went to check in today at Club Wyndham Governors Green today at about noon. Was welcomed and told that they were overbooked and that I would not be staying there but that they would accommodate me at another Wyndham Resort. How can they do that? I said, "So, is everyone here VIP Founders? Why are you kicking out/down a Platinum VIP?
"Sorry"

I had something similar happen to me at Grand Desert. We booked a 4 Bedroom Presidential and they told my wife they overbooked. They said since we made our booking with an upgrade it was the first to be cancelled. They did offer us a 3 bedroom and a 1 bedroom Deluxe. Not quite the same but disappointing non the less.

I would insist that all of my points are reimbursed. Neither of the other two Wyndham resorts in the area measure up to GG IMHO. It’s not going to be a good substitute experience.

The exact same thing happened to me at New Years year before last at Wyndham Palm Aire. We had booked airfare and our room which spanned over New Years eve six months prior to the trip. 2 days before our trip I received an email stating that my reservation needed to be moved. Well, the problem was is that we were meeting family also staying onsite for a family reunion. It was a mess. I thought surely if we arrive with small kids in tow these people will have mercy and my sister also staying is Founders VIP. Surely, they would listen to her. Nope....nothing. It was a horrendous experience. We had no car and couldn't get from the other resort to the Palm Aire to see our family. Even the manager at the resort acted like it was going to kill him to make the shuttle driver deliver us to the other Wyndham 20 minutes down the road (it was after their normal dropoff/pickup times). I am Diamond on the hotel side and had booked the trip with built-up points. Even the special VIP line couldn't help us. I will say that I took my revenge to TripAdvisor/Google/Yelp. And, it has cost them over $15,000/yearly in hotel bookings. I am now Titanium Elite in Marriott. Ironically, Wyndham for free matches my Marriott status (without giving them a dime). Sometimes I'll go and take the $200 gift sit through the sales presentation and then recite the story to the poor salesman while I explain how it would be a COLD day in h*** before I gave this company another dime. I start laughing every time they explain how that would have never happened if I had owned VIP Platinum on the condo side. Before leaving, I just make sure to repeat how their corporate office lost them a "huge" contract.

Considering that the others are discounted right now, you should get some points refunded.

Similar situation at Royal Vista this past New Years. I thought it was a Royal Vista thing, disappointing to hear it's happening elsewhere.

Years ago I went to a Blue Green presentation and that was one of there selling spiels that you won't have to worry about overbooking they even did a skit about it. After the presentation was over I pulled the main presenter aside and said Timeshare companies overbook too so your argument was false. He just shrugged his head I still got my 125 dollars so all was well.
It was a pretty entertaining and slick presentation.

Enjoy your vacations

Who want to own Wyndham when crap like this happens. Years ago I dumped my Marriott Weeks for less mistreatment than this...

George
So it looks like overbooking has become a problem now to. I guess even as a VIP Founder owner you would be out of luck if no rooms are available.

Over booking is standard practice in the travel and leisure sector. Now you see where Travel and Leisure fits in?

Maybe this is why they limited Holiday time to only owners starting Memorial Day... I wonder how many of the quests booked were not owners?

True, but with timeshares they are overbooking time that someone owns. It isn't the same as just renting a hotel room. Generally I would think leisure travelers are more likely to show up for their booking than a business traveler. So overbooking with hotels might make more sense. It may be cheaper over time for a business traveler to make and hold a reservation than having to book last minute. Leisure travelers don't have the luxury of someone else paying for their travel. There should be no reason that a timeshare is ever overbooked since it always comes from underlying owned real estate inventory.

100% resale!!
It could just be that there is something actually wrong with some of the units and they took them out of inventory after everyone had already booked.

We have a strong preference for Governors' Green as well. The only reason I can think of to be happy with Kingsgate instead of Governors' Green would be if I had children who are fond of the video games. Patriots' Place is a comfortable place to stay but with only an outdoor pool as an amenity (fire pit, too).

Wyndham definitely has inventory management problems. For weeks, Grand Palms has shown two units available -- a studio and a 2BR. But, you can't book either one.

Good question. I would add how many owners rent more points then they use personally and how many reservations are rented out while using resale points with VIP discounts and free room upgrades. I wonder how much inventory could be freed up if Wyndham eliminated rentals altogether along with the resale point loophole?

No, it couldn't. Mine was a same day booking/check-in.

As far as Grand Palms, they are aware of that issue (IT is working on it). I had a call with someone in Michael Browns area (response to an email) and she was already aware of that. It is a different 'ghost' issue than others we see (where after a few hours, the ghosts go away, the Grand Palms ghosts never go away, and I believe exist for the entire year).

My belief is if you have a confirmed reservation in writing it is your reserved unit at a specific location. I know I’d be mad as hell and demand the same quality of unit or better at a same caliber or better of resort location, and my points returned in full because of the breach of contract. If they wouldn’t accommodate me like that I’d move into their lobby to get the attention of someone with authority that could make it happen or be escorted out by law enforcement. Its a matter of principle. It’s not the owners’ fault if Wyndham can’t get it right.

It bothers me that we owners get told we should understand and accept when there are problems because of Wyndham's system. This is not our problem; it's yours and it's up to you to fix it.

The phrase to remember and use is "Make me whole." The resorts do their best; however they can't give you what they don't have. Owner Care is usually really good about refunding your points in these situations. That's all well and good but sometimes it just doesn't cut it when a large family group is split up and turns the vacation into a poor substitute for what you'd planned.

Since i'm currently on vacation at Old Town, and saw this post before I left town, my thoughts were, if this would happen to me, "make me whole" would mean book me at National Harbor in a comparable room , and reimburse me for the parking fees. It's not what we planned, but it would work. Truthfully the main reason I prefer OTA to NH is the free parking, and it's closeness to the Metro. And I OWN at NH...

For the OP, it sounds like they got booked at Kingsgate in the same room type, and got the resort fee reimbursed. For me, even though Kingsgate is a slight step down in quality (and no elevators), it would probably have been good enough. But I agree that this sort of thing is unacceptable and shouldn't happen. Especially if there are any Extra Vacations bookings or rooms on the travel websites. I occasionally see Urban resort rooms sold on them.

The bed configuration in the two units are completely different. For my family in a two bedroom it would be the difference between enjoying our living room or having to use it as a bedroom. Also Kingsgate has been discounted. There’s a reason for that. It’s really not an acceptable substitute. Governor’s Green would be an acceptable substitute for Kingsgate, but I don’t think the reverse is true. Not paying the resort fee for amenities that are likely not available is not really compensation.
