Hi all. I’ve basically written a book to describe my situation and request for advice. I realize this is a lot to read, but I’ve tried to provide as many details as possible, in hopes it will provide for the best answers from you experienced veterans… I think that the strategic part of this program is part of the fun!

I recently purchased 308k points through Discovery program and have until 12/31/2009 to use them. I bought it before I knew about the resale market and these forums, so that’s water under the bridge, so to speak. I believe that the 308k points will be enough points for my 2009 travel, and that I’ll need to use the traditional Wyndham reservation approach to use them (no RCI or pooling). After researching, I recently purchased 182k Pagosa Springs Converted Fixed Week through resale, which should close and complete transfer before the end of the year. Its points become available Jan 2009 (which I won’t need that year, so we could either pool, bank generics, or ARP the fixed week and bank it).

After researching everything, we felt like we would be good candidates for the Wyndham program (resale) for a few reasons… In looking through the resort directory, we’re interested in going to many of the Wyndham locations and thought that a resale timeshare would be a great and inexpensive way to see a lot of places throughout the US. We don’t come in with the expectation that our $643 yearly MF will provide an exotic destination every year … any exotics would just be icing on the cake. Our kids are grown, so we are not tied to school schedules for travel, but we’re not gluttons for punishment either, so we’d like to hit the locations when the weather is nice there.

So after reading and studying these forums, FAQ’s and Primers, I’m seeking some advice about how to best utilize this program for our needs and get the most out of it. I’m thinking we might be good candidates for banking some generic weeks in RCI for getting Wyn, since we’re flexible about both the location and the schedule. For 2009, I’ll have to use the Discovery points straight through Wyn because of the limitation of the Discovery program, but there still may be some value to a strategy on that use year. I imagine the Discovery program may give me a small advantage to booking tougher locations, as an enticement to buy retail. I should most likely book these before the resale transfer completes, so as to utilize this benefit (if it even exists).

So, here’s our top locations… Please take a look and comment on whether I should use the Discovery points or if they are candidates for RCI generics (and size recommendation) to obtain these. We also have the potential to ARP our converted fixed week (week #29 2BR Pagosa) for RCI deposit if someone thinks that’s worth doing in this case. My hope is that with smart strategy, advanced planning and flexibility on our part, we might be able to land 1-3 weeks at fun destinations per year on our 182k…

Bluebeards, St. Thomas
Sea Gardens, Pompano
South South, Tahoe
Newport Overlook, RI
Bonnet Creek, Orlando
Pagosa, CO
Old Town Alexandria, VA
Sedona, AZ
Glacier, WI
La Cascada, San Antonio
Makai Club, Princeville

Other places that are on the list, but a little lower down are Nashville, Smoky Mountains, Branson, Flagstaff, Patriots Place, Fairfield Bay, Angel Fire and Durango…

Huge thanks to anyone patient enough to have read this far and we appreciate your opinions on this!

Not sure about all the one in your listing, I will post what I know

Newport Overlook, RI - RCI has good chance
Bonnet Creek, Orlando - they seldomly deposit this, just recently deposit once, but I don't believe it will happen as frequent, so try internal
Pagosa, CO - RCI has good chance
Old Town Alexandria, VA - they seldomly deposit this, unless they try to sell new Washington resort, I will take internal exchange
Sedona, AZ - RCI has good chance
Glacier, WI - don't know, this is a new resort, I would expect internal has better chance
Nashville - RCI has chance
Smoky Mountains - RCI has chance but you may need better deposit than 28k
Branson - RCI has good chance
Patriots Place - RCI has good chance
Fairfield Bay- RCI has good chance

Hi Rob and Sandra-
Welcome to Tugs and start reading.

I have a technical question for the Advanced Wyndham-ites. Can they use the VIP Discovery member number with their resale points for 2009? If not, can they "transfer" the resale points (from this 2nd member account) to the Discovery Account.

Having a working knowledge of the Wyndham system, a lot of your resorts you would like to visit can be harder to get into during the Prime season. i.e. Sea Gardens during February is booked solid, but I found and got a week 9 at the 60 day discount off the online Wyndham reservation system.

Bonnet Creek just opened another tower and if it is just the two of you, getting a 1 bdr is easier when school is in session. Then use your VIP, and upgrade for FREE. This is getting to be a large resort, but Star Island is just a couple of miles away and around the corner ... it has its own charm. And just 60 miles away (up the interstate) is Daytona Beach and Ocean Walk ... if you need a quirkly vacation, go there for BikeOctoberFest (it is a 4 day, tamer version of fun - I got just Great TeeShirts with pumpkins, ghosts, bikes, fall leaves).

Those are my personal knowledge for the resorts you listed. As you have that VIP level for 2009, make the shorter visits to use your UNLIMITED housekeeping credits VIP benefit. If you can plan a bit (and as you are westcoast based you will need plane tickets), remember all reservations made in ONE day, use ONLY one RESERVATION TRANSACTION thingy. Reserve on Tues 5 different vacations, 1 RC. Change anything, 1 RC.
Read up on HK credits, too.

Have fun.

I believe they will be VIP till the end of 2009 or end of their Discover program. Never owned Discover program, but I believe they will have only one member account number. But they probably will not be able to mix Discover point with regualar point. The one I know get it done because they end up buying retail in the end, and sell people transfer the point to their regular account.

First - check the fine print on the Pagosa, it is my understanding that the recent wording on the Converted Weeks is that you cannot ARP your fixed week and deposit for RCI. (I considered a resale on a Westwinds week, and discovered that it was recently changed.)

IF you still can deposit Pagosa: I own a 2 bed lockoff "pink week" (they call it red). There is NO difference in trade power between the 1 bedroom deposit and the 2 bedroom deposit. So, go for the 2 weeks.

Do NOT expect fabulous trades for it. You CAN get lake tahoe ski time with it. What is nice is that it is a gage for generics - what I see with pagosa usually equates to 70k or less.

Alexandria you will need to do internally - you will not see it in RCI (not in cherry blossom time or summer).

Thank you all for helpful information. We gave up on the notion of trying to merge the Discovery Points with the FSP points, based on conversations with VC's and the like. It appears they will combine points if I purchase retail, otherwise it seems they will not. No big deal.

I went ahead and booked back-to-back weeks at Sea Gardens and Blue Beard's Beach, plus a few days in Tahoe with all the Discovery points. That, plus a week at a cabin (not Wyndham) in Yosemite next year will take care of our vacation needs through 2009.

So now, what to do with the 182k 2009 FSP points... Based on the feedback so far, I'm thinking RCI generics would be the best way to go initially and try to pick off the places that are easier to get thru RCI, while saving/pooling future points for internal exchanges... Deposit the generics early and set up ongoing searches for a few places/weeks in 2010. Then see how that goes to determine how to use 2010's points. Based on the places that I listed and Jya-Ning said would have chances thru RCI, what size deposits make the most sense? I could do 2x70k and 1x42k, or 1x70k, 2x42k and 1x28k, or a 70k and a bunch of 28k's or????

I know there's probably no perfect answer to this, and perhaps a lot of opinions about it. Please chime in and let me know what you would do!

Many thanks!

Several ways to determine how to deposit

1. determine how many vacations you want to use these deposits in the next 2 year (it expired at 2 year), and divide your total points by that, which gives you some idea how many points each deposit wll be around.

2. If you are in learing mod, deposit as many different type as you can. Usually season is more important in RCI than size, so try 28k, 70k, 105k combinations in that order.

3. If you have no idea where you will be, and you are more likely wait till later, try different combination too. But put more 28k, and you may want to forget all the 105k deposit.

4. If you have any idea which area is hard to get to, which is easy, and you don't have any schedule to the easy one, deposit 28k for easy area. At least 70k for hard trade area. And if an area is close to 105k or above, you may want to see if there is other way to get there than deposit to RCI.

Finally, deposit at the last month where most of your travel will be done. So if you plan to travel at Oct, deposit at Oct, so you get 2 year start. Or depoist based on 1 1/2 year, you will deposit at March so you get 15 month start.
