What do you guys all do in Williamsburg anyway? Do you just stay at the resort? Do you like going back to the historical village a lot? So far for time / distance everyone in my family who's been to both prefer Massanutten or places in Vermont for similar drive time.
Williamsburg is one of the most history-rich places in the country. Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown may not be true bucket list places but they are definitely worthy of a visit. The Virginia Air and Space Science Center in Hampton is a good day trip. Norfolk has the largest Navy complex in the world a bit farther east on I-64. Lots to do in Norfolk. The Virginia Beach waterfront is about 90 minutes from Wmsburg. Busch Gardens/Water Country USA is just the other side of town.
The College of William and Mary is one of the three best public university in Virginia (with UVA and James Madison University).
I was homeported in Norfolk way back, owned a house in VA Beach before I was married. Had a 24 ft cruiser on a trailer parked at the Naval Amphibious Base. Nice boat ramp there with the Chesapeake Bay a few minutes away. Granted this was a few decades ago but the area is quite familiar. We've been to Williamsburg so many times and have done all the things mentioned above. So, mostly we hang out at the resort. Participate in many of the activities -- bingo, trivia, Sunday AM muffins and mimosas (where
@HitchHiker71 and I met). Shoot some pool. Play some mini-golf. Hang out at the pool in season (me, not my wife).
We go to Governor's Green four or five times a year most years. Our last visit was short -- Thursday to Tuesday because I had a medical treatment both Wednesdays. Usually, we're there from ten days to two weeks at a time. We almost always see people we've met on previous visits. GG has some guests on extended stays, several weeks at a time until they are forced to check out and check back in. We know all the front desk people, management, activities staff, and some of the maintenance folks. My wife is a native Spanish speaker (but doesn't look it) so she surprises housekeeping and some maintenance people (Oh, you speak Spanish so well!) and keeps them from working because she likes to converse in her native language.
Last visit, we messed up our timing and arrived at 11:06 PM. The office closes at 11:00. But they saw us coming, knew it was us, and got us checked in at the guard shack. That's nice!
On the down side, summers in Virginia can be oppressive. Not Orlando oppressive but uncomfortably hot and humid. Less so at Massanutten because of the elevation.
