From SVO -

Thank you for your interest in The Westin St. John Resort & Villas refurbishment project and for submitting your proxy and vote. This was the second opportunity presented to the members to vote on the refurbishment project. We are pleased to announce that we have received an overwhelming response from the members on this project. Despite the support, however, the measure did not pass because of the shortage of the number of votes submitted by the members. Out of the 2,996 votes received, 2,567, or 86%, voted in favor of the refurbishment project and 429, or 14%, voted against it. In order for the project to move forward, an affirmative vote of 2/3 of all members must be received. We received a total affirmative vote of 55% from all members.

The board is currently examining the most efficient method possible to accomplish the refurbishment project as part of the existing reserve plan as well as additional ways to improve the resort and vacation experience.

We appreciate your time, attention and support on this matter. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at boardrelations@starwoodvo.com.

Unfortunate result

Maybe they would have had a better response had they given more notice. What's to stop them from trying again? I sent in a response stating that perhaps they should have included the proxy with the annual maintenance fee notices - everyone reads them and they have a due date.

Come on, owners! Let's find a way to get this project done - our property values are at stake!!!

I agree. I also sent a note asking why it was 2/3 required this time and 50% last time (?)

To bad there are not more WSJ owners on TUG. When we were there in June - only one owner I spoke to knew about TUG (or buying resale) - nor did they seem to care.

I wrote an email thanking the board for their efforts and conveying my disappointment. It doesn't seem fair that the overwhelming majority of owners vote for a project yet owners who did not respond, are given the deciding factor. Pam

Of subject, but... Wow! a whole bunch (10!) of WSJ weeks were just added to TUG classifieds (non-TUG member) - as 'Westin Vacation Club' by a ReMax broker.

I, too, just sent the Board an email stating my disappointment with the results. Hopefully they will consider another vote.

Maybe we need a new board

I mean, really, don't you think the second vote was handled poorly? Who's giving the board advice, anyway. The proxies were confusing, and different the second time from the first. I know this because I own a week 17 , unit 4210 which was subject to the assessment, and a week 18, 4310 which was not. The first set of proxies gave us an option to vote for a wall to be built in between the two upstairs bedrooms; the second did not. Furthermore, from the way the proxies were worded, I'm sure owners who were not subject to the assessment felt that their votes weren't needed since they weren't subject to the proxy.

The board should run the next proxy by a set of owners and see if it's as clear to the owners as they (the board) think it is.

If the board doesn't want to consider a new vote, or adequately explain why we can't have a new vote, maybe we need a new board.

The Board is currently run by Starwood, and all members are Starwood staff. I asked and was told that not enough of the units have been purchased for Starwood to turn the governence of the board over to the ownership.
