WSJ trading within season

My sister in law owns week 28 at WSJ, and wants to trade for week 22. She was told by Starwood that she had a better chance of a trade if she gave up her week and waitlisted for week 22, rather than keeping week 28 and waitlisting for 22. Does this sound right? The obvious risk is she gets neither one.

This is a major problem - because it is true. This is an advantage for 4* Elites and above because they can hold a reservation and be wait-listed. 3* Elite and below must give up their reservation, and be wait-listed. This is a bad idea as you will likely lose both. Week 22 is more popular than week 28 - if they were trying to move back in weeks (Sept to mid-Oct) then probably a better chance.

Once WSJ BV is open - this may open up posibilities for exchanging (after a while), but notice the change in SOs seasons between the two WSJ resorts - this creates added difficulty. Our WSJ VG 2Bd/3Ba TH (wk24) is only worth 67.1K SOs (amazingly so...) - this means that are forced to move back in season for a similiar unit exchange in the WSJ BV complex.

I don't own at WSJ, but what I know and have read, you are more likely to come out with nothing if you trade in your week and waitlist for another week.

Trade was made

We were surprised to hear that the trade went through today, just a couple of days after my sister in law gave up week 28 and waitlisting for week 22. Apparently even the Starwood person was surprised.

Great news - plus, gives hope to those who are attempting to do this.

I forgot to add/ask -

WSJ VG villas are fixed - therefore, the reservation period is a bit different than float. An owner can reserve their unit at 10-14 months - and between 8-10 months can attempt to exchange within their season. At the 8-month point - all SVN members can attempt to exchange in. Also - some villa types may be easier to exchange - there are many more studios/1Bd villas than there are 2Bd and 3Bd villas.

The questions are:
1) did they do this is the 8-10 month window, or at the 8-month point?
2) what kind of villa did they exchange (3Bd, 2Bd, 1bd, or studio)?

They own a week 28 2 br villa and were told they got a 2 br week 22. I assume that would be a villa too (I presume Starwood would not trade for the new units?)

Week 28 was just in mid July, so they did this trade at the 11 month mark.

Since they are exchanging into week 22 (Sat. May 31) this is in the Owner exchange window (8-10 months) - they did this exchange at 9.5 months out. (if my math is correct)

The WSJ VG 2Bd villa is 67.1K SOs - so it would have to be in the VG villas since the BV villas are 81K SOs for week 22

You are right. I was counting 11 months to her original week 28 next July. Math was never my strong suit. :)
