worth it to extend points?

Wondering whether we should extend our points.

We have 38,050 points, it would be $200 to extend, so if I'm doing the math correctly, it's cheaper to extend than to rent if we needed more.
If we extend, do we have to use them by July 31st or book by July 31st? I think they have to be used?

We are new to the timeshare dealio, so I see that people rent/sell/otherwise transfer points to other people, so even if we don't use, is it worth it? How much effort is it to do this?

Thanks for any help or information!

Regards,

Gwen

I believe the extension is for 6 months so that would be until the end of June not July and you have to use them with HICV by that date or book something with RCI (that one can be for a later date) by the time it expires. If you don't have a plan to use them by that date don't pay to extend them or come May you will be in the same boat you are now but have even fewer options than you do now.

I wouldn't extend them just to rent them out. I doubt you could get more than $300 for a reservation with those points and if you paid $200 plus the $64 reservation fee you would be making about $40. You would do better to find someone willing to pay $200 for something between now and the end of the year. Sure you can try for $300-$350 but there are a lot of people with expiring bonus days and points that are trying to get rid of and the holiday reservations are already booked and the units still available between now and the end of the year are very low season. IMO renting takes 6-12 months of planning or willy nilley but then it is just take what you can get.

Thank you for the detailed response. Great information and confirmed what I was suspecting - not worth the effort to extend unless I figure out a way to use them myself. I will take a look at RCI - past experience has not been good, in that I had a really hard time finding anything that met our vacation planning.

Thanks again, really appreciate your help. We got into HICV without as much foresight as we should have had. We are enjoying the timeshare, but still getting used to the rules.
