This is unfortunate. I have been to Yellowstone a couple of times since my husband is from Montana. The first time, I did get out of the car to take photos. My husband warned me to stay far away. If he had not warned me, I don‘t know what could have happened. We saw our first bison before we reached the park and I did not know it was dangerous to approach them. It is possible this woman did not see the warnings or realize how serious they are. It took my husband a bit of convincing before I truly understood. I never got out of the car to take photos once I understood how dangerous it was. You can take great photos from the car. I have many beautiful photos taken from my car. The bison approach the car and get very close. No need to get out of the car.

Sometime when watching animal television shows, the producers make wild animals so peaceful and friendly. This will give some tourist false ideas that wild animals will not harm or attack you. IMHO.

Stupid is as stupid does.

With that out of the way, I am more concerned for the animal as I hope this bison is not considered dangerous to humans after this and someone thinks the bison should be put down.

Once, a small herd wandered thru a pull-off and right past our car.
We kept the windows rolled up and kept as still & quiet as possible.
Rather than cross at the stream, they preferred to use the bridge.
It seems that they were rather used to cars yielding right-of-way.

The are very used to cars. People too close not so much.

Plenty of good photo ops from your vehicle.

We have been to Yellowstone (but it was years ago) but I know that in Yosemite, Rocky Mountain, and other parks that we have been to, they tell you to keep your distance from the animals, for your safety and theirs. When in RMNP we pulled over when we saw a small crowd. It turned out to be a mama bear and a cub, maybe 100 yards away. We are campers/hikers and mama-anythings with baby-anythings while adorable, are at the top of my stay far away list. There were people taking videos using their ipads that were closer than we were. I figured that we just had to be faster than those folks (lol) but even at 100 yards, I was not comfortable with the distance. Bears can run fast! We took a look then got back in our car and left. I was surprised at how calm the mama was, so I guess that it felt far away enough for her.

You couldn't pay me enough to get out of a car near a bison. Those things are huge!! The second article adds more information and said that she approached the bison multiple times within 10 feet in her campsite which if true, is a huge mistake (obviously). That said, if it was in your campsite it would be tough to get 25 yards away (recommended distance). At any rate, when you are in the park, you are in the animal's world and have to follow their "rules".

In Banff last summer, we saw a crowd of people approaching an elk. They had it all but circled. Someone did call the mounties to get them to get the people out of there. Later, at a different location, we saw people coming within about fifteen yards of an elk with its young one. Unbelievable how stupid people can be.

I worked at Yellowstone one summer during college. We were given a lot of instructions on how to act around the animals. We would encounter bears quite frequently. One day when I was done cleaning a cabin I opened the door to leave and found a bear on the small porch. I did what I was instructed not to do, which was scream. Then I slammed the door. I don't know who was the more scared, the bear, or me.

You can't fix 'STUPID'! When those people entered the park, they were given materials that tell absolutely to stay away from wildlife. They are not tame, and can and will hurt and/or kill people.

Funny story about wildlife and parks. One summer we were in Yellowstone with my aunt and uncle and cousins. We were driving around and every time you'd see a group of cars stopped, you'd stop too to check out what they were seeing. My uncle made the comment about how if he stopped to take a leak he'd have an audience within a few minutes.

... At any rate, when you are in the park, you are in the animal's world and have to follow their "rules".

Once, we were at at a VC in Denali NP when a bear paid a visit.
The Rangers herded everyone into the building and locked us inside.
We could look out and see the bear wader around and check us out.
It seemed like we were the zoo-animals and the bear was the tourist.
