Wisconsin bars flooded with patrons hours after state Supreme Court strikes down coronavirus stay-at-home order [MERGED]

A photo taken by the Green Bay Press-Gazette showed that the State Street Pub in Green Bay, Wis., had briefly reopened with about a dozen customers inside after the state Supreme Court ruling. Decorations for St. Patrick’s Day, the March 17 holiday, remained on display the first day of the reopening. Neither the bartender nor the customers had masks.

But that bar’s reopening was also short-lived. By Wednesday night, Brown County Health Officer Anna Destree issued a local safer-at-home order to replace the now resolute state rules, requiring all county residents to remain home until at least May 20.

I think local control by county makes much more sense so I welcome the change. Now if only we could have that ruling here in our State. Well I can dream, right.

Well anyone who's lived in Wisconsin knows the majority are already gathering in groups at people's homes. Heck I was in bars at age 13 (not drinking) but that's just what you do in farm country! And this is what happens when decisions are made without consulting all the players to take in all the plans/outcomes. REally the legislators and health officials (everywhere) need to get their stinkin act together and present a united front with clear guidelines that are realistic. Saying "No schools" or "no bars/restaurants" until a vaccine is developed is not realistic. I'm not sure why everyone is harping on this as even with vaccines only a few diseases have been eradicated, and with a widely available free flu vaccine we still have 10K+ deaths during flu seasons (and some seasons 60k+).

Our municipality is keeping the Safer at Home order in place until next week. Wisconsin was very close to the end of the original mandate order. We are refraining from judgement, as there is no way to truly determine what will happen. Most of our family, friends and neighbors will still be adhering to the safe practices. At this point in the timeline, our hospitals should be able to handle new cases; that was always the point of shutting things down, right?

Thanks for posting something which can't be responded to without being political. I guess you win the day.

Everyone talking loudly in an indoor bar...a near perfect petri dish. Let's see what happens in 2 weeks to these patrons.

Not sure “2 dozen people” (or the 14 I counted in the picture) is “flooding the bar.” Wonder what the legal capacity of the bar is (100? more?) and if the photo was taken in a way to promote for shock value.

In the past few weeks have been very cautious about making assumptions if all the numerical information isn’t being fully presented. Even a CV study released by UCSF last week was written with a slant.

Off my soapbox and back into SIP now.

I LOVE WISCONSIN

I have fond memories of seeing people, getting pitchers of beer from the side door of their local bars back in the good old days.. Most families would get together after dinner to talk about their day at work while enjoying a draft beer or two. :)

hospitals are a key consideration .

If your local hospital is impacted in a manner that causes closure - it is not like you can buy
knee replacement surgery on Amazon .

The underlying question is what limits are there to a Governor's declaration of emergency and the appointed health commission to declare a stay at home emergency except for "essential" activities. This includes ordering everyone to stay home, closing all "non-essential" businesses, prohibiting private gatherings of any number of people who are not part of a single household, and forbidding all "non-essential" travel

On March 12 Governor Tony Evers declared a public health emergency and directed health secretary Andrea Palm to take “all necessary and appropriate measures to prevent and respond to incidents of COVID-19 in the State.” She then ordered all individuals to stay home except for “essential” activities.
Violators could be fined $250 and imprisoned for up to 30 days.

The U.S. Constitution grants states broad police powers to protect public welfare, and many states like Wisconsin have laws that let governors suspend rules during emergencies. But this doesn’t mean that governors can do whatever they want whenever they proclaim an emergency.

The issue is what are the rights and powers of a governor to define what are non-essential business, and order all non-essential businesses to shut down and direct people to stay home.

One issue is what is the requirement for the legislatures to approve or reject these declarations. The SIP orders have been in place for almost two months. Does anyone know whether any state legislatures have voted on these emergency orders.

Another issue is at what point should courts rule on these issues. The rulings would clearly infringe on people's constitutional rights but for the emergency. So let's say a governor or health commissioner decides on extend the emergency for another 6 months. What rights does the judiciary have to examine the reasonableness of these decisions.

I wish he'd keep his butt out of Texas. The guy is just plain weird. He'd better take that weirdness to Austin. (No offense meant to anyone in Austin. I'm just keeping in line with their theme of "Keep Austin Weird.") Musk is a whole different breed of "weird."

He's moving to a more business friendly state of Texas.

You are right. I could post many links to prove it too. Because we all know if you post a link or two, the link you post is true.:D
