Just to let everyone know the dolphin from the movie from Dolphin Tale is at the Clearwater Aquarium and a permanent resident there. Her name is Winter. We were there last week and my kids really enjoyed the visit especially the Dolphin and petting the stingrays. I think it's probably a 1/2 day outing and we spent the rest of the day on the beach at Clearwater.

Petting stinging critters --- please help me to understand...

<snip>...my kids really enjoyed the visit especially the Dolphin and petting the stingrays.

Forgive my ignorance, but there are no stingrays to be found anywhere around here in our chilly Maine waters, so I'm not familiar with these particular critters at all. Accordingly, I'm having some difficulty reconciling the two seemingly conflicting concepts of "petting" and "stingrays". Or was this maybe just an inadvertent typo error?

Since stingrays presumably have to swim in order to be able to breathe (like sharks and other such cartilaginous "fishes") how / why could they stay still long enough to be "petted" in the first place, even if they were "debarbed"?

Sorry, but I'm a bit baffled here...

Rays are friendly if not threatened. They will give you a hickey if you smell like fish food.

theo, the rays are in a tank about 3 feet high and 30 feet long 10 feet wide, they have no barbs (removed) so are quite safe, they circle in the tank and actually lift their "wings" our of the water to be touched!

It would be fun to see Winter in person. I enjoyed the movie, and she has a great life story.

We saw her before she became famous!

We toured the small aquarium two years ago and saw her then. Would highly recommend touring the place. I have recently purchased a memorial type :whoopie: "brick" so we also need to return to view where it has been placed!
