We are headed to Winter Park at the end of this month. Flying into Denver and will spend a day there before heading to Winter Park for the week.

We know that we would like to spend a few days in the Rocky Mountain National Park area. Any other must dos near Winter Park? I know that I'm probably wrong, but seems like there is not a lot is going on there late Sept-early Oct - when I would think it would be absolutely gorgeous there!

Should we take a day trip and head farther west towards Vail or Breckenridge?

Sounds like rafting might be out this late in the season, but I'm still looking into that.

We love scenery, medium hikes, fun food places. We bike, but not sure we should mountain bike!

Thank you in advance for any ideas!

Late September is an excellent time to visit Colorado. The Elk will be in their rut and you'll see them all over RMNP. Look into taking a train ride to view the fall colors. There's one that leaves out of Leadville. You can bring your own food and drink aboard or purchase simple items like popcorn and hot dogs on the train (no alcohol). For a gorgeous mountain drive try the Maroon Bells in Aspen, it is seriously breathtaking. Check websites like Roadfood and Diners Drive ins and Dives and Tripadvisor for local eateries. We'll be up there in Winter Park around the same time!

Thank you Neesie and x3 Skier for the responses!

Neesie - don't know if you like football, but my husband is a huge Vikings fan. The end of our trip coincides with the Vikings playing the Broncos at Mile High.

I actually wanted to fly right into Steamboat and stay there - there were a lot more TS options. But we decided to stay closer to family in Denver. Sounds like it still might be a good idea to head up there that week!
