Greetings !

The subject lines says it all !

Former Windows-XP user struggling to stay afloat.
Many questions so I'll limit them.

I copied my data (Folders-and-Files) onto my external Hard-Disk.
In my former XP life, I would open Windows-Explorer and Copy-and-Paste,
from the External-Disk to my C: Drive.
Simple !!!

I started by looking for Windows-Explorer... Gone ???

So I start reading about Win-7 and according to my interpretation:
There are "Libraries" but they don't actually store the Folders/Files ???
The Folders/Files may be stored in different locations (internal drives/external drives, etc.) -or- in the librarie's "default-location" ???

Gulp !!!

Thus Question #1:
  • How can I copy my XP data to my Win-7 machine ?

TIA !!!

Its actually simple. Win-Explorer is still there, just jazzed-up a bit.

Right-click the windows-bubble (start button) on the L-side of the task-bar.
See menu item "Properties"... that gives you start and task bar options.
See menu item "Open Windows Explorer"... that opens...

(or) Left click and choose menu item "Computer" to do the same exact thing.

In the window that opens, look below "Libraries" to the "Computer" item.
Click on that to expand that and you'll see a list of all attached drives.
Highlight the folder/file you want to use, drag to copy or right-click to open a menu.

Easier-Said-Than-Done for moi.

I clicked on the windows-bubble and up pops two columns.
The left column is a list of programs I used "recently" with the
last entry: "All Programs"

The right column with the Dell Logo,
followed by "Dougs" then "Documents", "Pictures", "Music", "Games", etc. etc.
But... no menu item "Properties" ! :crash:

Where (other than leaving XP) did I go wrong ??? :ignore:

Talent-312:

Okay, I researched your advice again and found out:
  • I left-clicked on the win-bubble, instead of right-clicking it, as you advised.
  • By left-clicking the win-bubble, the left-column is the "Jump List"
So... I'm learning thanks to you!

Late now so I continue again tomorrow.

Thanks Again !!!

You can always press and hold down the Windows key and press the E key for Windows Explorer. Libraries took me awhile to get used to, but they allow you to easily look for similar type files across many different storage mediums without looking at different directories. Once you get used to them they start to make sense.

Hi Stu ! :hi:

Thanks for your tip re: the Windows key and the E key for Windows Explorer.
I appreciate these feedback and learn much more quickly than by browsing Win-7 stuff I find online.

It also decreases the odds of making disatrious boo-boos ;)

I definitely see the value of the "libraries" concept !

QUESTION:
Are the libraries automatically "populated"....
or do I need to take certain steps
to "associate" my files with the libraries ???

TIA.... Doug

When you open the Start menu, you should one that says, "Computer." That's the souped-up Explorer. BUT, I suggested RIGHT clicking on the Windows bubble to get to the "Open Windows Explorer" option faster.
-----------------
BTW, Right-Click on any desktop icon and you can use a "pin to start menu" or "pin to task bar" option to make frequently used programs or files more accessible.

Thank You !!!!

Thanks to Talent-312's and StuVan's assistance,
I successfully migrated my XP folders-and-files to Win-7 PC !!! :whoopie:

I was also able to "associate" my "Music" folders to the Music Library and created sub-libraries in Music.

Thanks Again for all you help !!!

I have always felt that reading the manual or buying a book helps.

Its much more fun to just punch a bunch of buttons and see what happens.

Is that like, if you put a million monkeys in front of a million typewriters, how long would it take them to accidentally produce 'War and Peace?'

Most of this stuff is pretty intuitive, but yeah...
Click away, and before you know it, you've ordered 80 rolls of toilet paper from Amazon.com
