I recall my flight last year had wifi, but it only worked when flying over land (which means not most of the trip).

Is this a faulty memory?

Wondering if there are any flights/airlines where you can check your email while flying over the pacific.

and yes, I understand the benefits of unplugging, but I will hopefully have some very important emails coming in on the day I plan on flying to OGG this year.

Thanks!

It should work. I travel for work quite a bit and have used the WiFi on long haul flights from San Francisco to Europe and Asia.. Much of those flights are over water.

That said, in my experience coverage can be spotty and slow.. It works OK for email and light web surfing.. But you won't streaming movies...

United has several flights that have wifi outside the mainland. It depends on the plane you are on.

thank you...yes, I will just need to check and hopefully reply to some emails.

I am applying for my pre-doctoral internship, and most invites for interviews come via email between December 1st and 15th. I'm flying on December 11th, and want to be able to respond asap to get my first choice interview slots.

Depends on aircraft. AA shows the wifi icon on reservations to Hawaii but the planes don't have the capability (yet). They are replacing the current 757s with new A321 and I'm not sure if they will have this feature or not. It's definitely less certain for flights over water and if I was you, I wouldn't expect it even if the airline site shows it will have it.

On the flights with wifi we've taken, it stops working when you get away from land - that's on Hawaiian and Alaska.

It depends on the tech.
Some put a radio on the belly of the plane and work like amped up cell phones with masts on the ground. Those don't work over water.

Some use Sat links. Those do.

Just make sure you're on the right A321, ETOPS qualified to fly over water to Hawaii.

American Airlines accidentally flew the wrong plane from L.A. to Hawaii
