Yesterday I went to pay my credit card bill and there was a charge for $82.13 I didn't recognize. Vendor name showed as SQ *XYZ| . I knew that the SQ meant the Square credit system. And I thought I'd seen a similar code a few months ago. Did a quick check of any statements I could get my hands on, but didn't see another SQ charge. Googled trying to find the code, no real hits but some gaming stuff came up and a few years ago we did have our card compromised with something we didn't recognize and the cc agent made a comment "oh, you're not big gamers, huh?". I didn't even know what that meant, and only figured out what a "gamer" was more recently.

Next was the phone call to Citibank -- I don't remember what this is, can you tell me where the charge came from. No, we'll issue you a new card. Wait, wait, wait. It is likely a legit charge, I just don't recognize it, can you tell me what company XYZ is? No, we'll issue you a new card. Sigh. So a new card is coming and now I need to get all of this year's statements together to see if any auto payments are hitting that card (I don't think so, fingers crossed).

As the evening goes on the brain starts to work behind the scenes as I watch Schitt's Creek. Hmm, I do recall seeing that SQ code recently. Hmm, now I remember whatever it was for, the bill turned out to be coincidentally on my desk at the time I was looking at the cc statement. Hmm, what was that for? Oh, I know it was $800 worth of work on the PT Cruiser radiator and I remember thinking why does "Frank & John's Automotive" in our town use the Square code XYZ and show as in a different nearby town. How the heck is anyone supposed to recognize a vendor name that gives them no clue as to who submitted the charge? FJA San Pedro CA, yeah, half a chance, but XYZ Carson CA, no way! Heck, they cancelled my card for nothing and now I need to call Frank and apologize and give him another credit card for the other $82 (which was for a radiator cap that split after all the initial work had been done).

So about an hour ago I get an email from Square. My first thought was "Spam/Scam" because I've received several emails in the past six months that didn't pertain to anything I was doing/buying. In fact two of the emails were sent to me as if I were the woodworking company for which they were giving a customer a refund. But since Square had just come up yesterday, I looked at it. They are issuing me a credit for $760.42. No details were given, and I didn't want to click on anything when I was upstairs on the iPad. But then it hit me $760.42 refund ... $800 radiator bill. Sh*t, they've gone back several months and cancelled the original charge for the radiator work! I'll go over to my mechanic tomorrow with a check -- I hope he doesn't get hit with a charge back fee.

Why oh why couldn't Citibank just have told me the business name of the Square code, or even given me a hint as to the type of business it was?? I find that so bizarre! Makes me wonder if they look at Square as a competitor and are uncooperative about this kind of transaction on purpose.

I suspect that Citi simply doesn't know. They receive the merchant information from Square. Contacting Square might have gotten more information that contacting Citi.

Edited to add: Ultimately fault to a degree lies with the vendor. It is very easy for them to configure how their name shows up on a credit card statement. When you go in and talk to them, you need to tell them they need to fix this in their Square account online.

The issue lies with Square. Square offers a simple solution to small companies and vendors but offers no other information on the cc bill. We used to pick up dinner from a couple of Food Trucks once a week who were out there in the boonies where we lived. CC bill showed Square. I remembered after a while what they were when I went to check the cc statements.

I have a spreadsheet that lists my auto payments, including CC used.
When I have to change the card # or expiry date, I use it as a checklist.
It's a pain, but the list makes sure they all get done.
