I understand not relishing political discussions but things are going to hell in a hand basket and the most prolific discussion here has been some garbage about offshore wind turbines. I would really like to see something more relevant. Such as how does ICE/DHS have the authority to remove evidence from a crime scene that should be investigated by a third party, not the one that perpetrated it.

Seems to me it wouldn’t be hard to have a private sub forum for something like this.

an unlimited supply of places one can go to discuss current social issues, in fact id bet its nearly impossible for someone to browse the internet just about ANYWHERE and not encounter a headline/post/discussion/oped/etc regarding every major topic under the sun.

TUG just isnt one of them.

I am afraid it would really turn my opinion of some people based on their statements
I have some friends who I disagree with very much, I can’t see how they can feel the way they do, so we don’t discuss it. I did tell them once they would have to leave my house if they continued their conversation

- People can't be civil - it's been proven here over and over.
- It leaks over into other forums.
- It's a nightmare to moderate.

This is one of the biggest hurdles. Sadly, the internet has given people with lesser intellectual abilities the ability to espouse their opinions as fact, with no checks and balances. It also allows similar folks to see the opinions of these people, who unsurprisingly agree with the poppycock, and it spreads like wildfire in 70mph winds.

Too many people, who have little ability to think, with low education and logic skills, are certain that they are right, and those with professional expertise are inept and part of some cabal. When you use logic and facts, they insist you have made it up and have no ability to understand.

Even if my views are different, I would like to be treated with dignity and respect. I hope that's the way I'll treat others. It's hard to discuss politics and religion and keep things civil. I'm support this site's current policy.

Even in person people are going overboard .

My sister mentioned not long ago her long time friend X starts actually yelling if something comes up political, so they don't see them right now as too stressful.

I saw a few old coworkers last week for coffee. G is still working and had a client repeatedly engage about some protestors in town. So she gave him a neutral reply, it was the end of the day and no one else was in the area. Clients response was to start yelling and was coming around the desk at her waving his arms. She told him he had to leave the area or security.

The state of affairs has degraded. Diplomacy is a thing of the past .

Sadly, having a civil discussion with anyone regarding anything remotely related to opposing party politics is nearly impossible. Everyone is so polarized in their opinions and it has become socially acceptable to be rude, disrespectful, and disagreeable with anyone with whom you disagree. The only way I can spend time with my siblings is if we agree to avoid any conversation remotely political or current events related. As a society, we used to be able to have a discussion about what is "right & wrong" or discussions that could be "black or white or grey" opinion topics, without having a fight over "right & left", but it seems those times are past. Civility is dead.

I enjoy discussing topics that interest me here just because it doesn't devolve into those topics.

We have a couple of local community pages on Facebook and it's turned into one big b%tchfest, back and forth, nothing of local Interest.

Don't even go on Nextdoor if you don't want to read about lost dogs, lost cats, coyotes, kids on e bikes, etc.

I agree that it's easy to find places (like reddit) to have whatever political fights you want to. I have also seen how online anyway it quickly devolves and then spreads and now you're unable to have any discussion without someone claiming your issue is that you have the wrong politics or something. I come to TUG to learn about timeshares. I can get political talking points and insults thrown back and forth most places online - I can't get the deep timeshare knowledge.

I really do recommend the OP check out reddit if they haven't for a reasonable forum UI (under old.reddit.com anyway) and a bazillion subs with options on political or current events to suit your current mood.

We still see this to this day coming out of the COVID discussions. People still have personal beefs with others based on their thoughts regarding COVID. You can see it in every time they reply to a post.

I think we have exhausted this topic, since someone already jumped in with a political response (deleted.)
