its almost like its not the ships at fault....or the workers on the dock...

The NEWS says the California port situation is caused by a driver shortage.

Not so fast: It is in part caused by a California Truck Ban which says all trucks must be 2011 or newer and a law called AB 5 which prohibits Owner Operators.

Traditionally the ports have been served by Owner Operators (non union). California has now banned Owner Operators.

Long term, truckers in California are not investing in new trucks because California has a law that makes them illegal in 2035. The requirement is to purchase electric trucks which do not exist.

And in the words of Paul Harvey, “Now you know the rest of the story”

BUSINESS
CARB to begin blocking certain trucks’ DMV registrations in 2020

Carriers domiciled in California with trucks older than 2011 model, or using engines manufactured before 2010, will need to meet the Board’s new Truck and Bus Regulation beginning in 2020 or their vehicles will be blocked from registration with the state’s DMV, the state has said.

The new “health-based requirements” will need to be met before a driver is allowed to register his or her truck through the Department of Motor Vehicles, CARB says. A new enforcement tool used by the DMV beginning in 2020 will automatically block 2010 and older trucks from registration.

No wonder I saw so many trains with containers coming from the West Coast on my recent train trip out west. This will be good for BNSF and Union Pacific.

Without trains carrying containers it would be a total disaster.

Send them to the Hampton Roads Ports. The channels are very deep.

Or up the Bay in Baltimore. No backups here either. We're about a year away from handling super container ships, as we just had new cranes delivered by barge next month. They barely fit under the Chesapeake Bay Bridge (by like 10-12 feet).

We're good to go on the regular ones though.

Let's hope CA doesn't ban diesel train engines. Every time at get stuck at a crossing with a long train, I think about how many trucks are being taken off the road because of that train.

LOL
right wingers hate California !

But the Georgia ports backlog is worse and it has nothing to do with California "emission standards" !

And where are they going to get the workers?

Cheers
They will mandate all those already working and earning to stop taking time to sleep and work double or triple shifts in hopes of pushing them into higher tax brackets so they can pay more to the stay at home money collectors.

I heard there is more to the driver shortage than what is actively reported. Some owner operators will just not work for what is being offered because they will lose money on those runs.

Department of Transportation Secretary has been on paternity leave since mid-August instead of working 12 hour days to solve the problem.

It must be nice to start a job in Jan and get over two months paternity leave in the first year. We were lucky if we didn't have to go to work the day after our children were born.
