Hi folks,

Eldest daughter (just graduated William & Mary) just received an internship  at Iona College in New Rochelle for 10 months starting sometime in August. Who might you know (Aunt, Uncle, Parent, Sibling, college roomie, etc.) who might have a need for a live in nanny (part time) or want to rent a room and a bath, have a guest cottage, etc? She gets a stipend, but it won't cover much housing if she intends to eat this year.

Please e-mail or pm me. We'll be heading there soon to check it out.

Thanks in advance!

I highly suggest that you go to http://nypennysaver.com/ and get a post in the next few editions of the "magazine". The Pennysaver is a newspaper style magazine that is sent out to pretty much everyone in Westchester County. Even though it is called the Pennysaver, it is not just a place to get things cheap, it is also used to do exactly what you (your daughter) is trying to do (nanny or rent).

One note. Westchester County is a very affluent area. New Rochelle can be very affluent and there are also some areas that you don't want to be in. Hope that helps.

My Brother and his lovely wife live in New Rochelle - and my sister in law teaches at Iona College.
My 2 children were born at New Rochelle Hospital - now called Sound Shore Medical Center....and I got my marriage license there 28 years ago - right next to where they sell dog licenses

Send me a PM.....

Unfortunately, they don't have a Pennysaver in the zip code for New Rochelle.

Didn't Rob & Laura Petrie live in New Rochelle? :D

That was the first thing I thought of. I am such a fan of that show! :)

How about applying for this nanny position (if qualified). It's for weekends only, one 13 year old girl. The salary is between $50-75K plus benefits.

Seriously, though, New Rochelle is a very expensive community, as is most of Westchester County. There is quite a bit of student housing surrounding Iona College. Definitely contact the college by phone to see what might be available.

Your daughter will probably have to consider sharing an apartment with other students, or rent a single room in a two-family house. There are a few sections of New Rochelle (and neighboring towns Mt. Vernon and Yonkers) that have low income areas with high crime so you really need someone to guide you as to where to look.

There are some nice, safe areas of the north Bronx with two family homes that will be cheaper than Westchester. Usually 2-4 female renters have their own room on the second floor and share the kitchen and one or two bathrooms. There's one area in particular, Woodlawn, where many Irish people do this. There is bus transportation from that area to Iona.

Also, there are a lot of different types of housing arrangements advertised on Craig's List. Check the Bronx, Yonkers, New Rochelle, Eastchester, Scarsdale, and White Plains.

There's also Pennysaver magazines covering all of these areas. They are delivered with the regular postal mail, usually on Saturday. I can send some to you, if you'd like. (I live in the neighboring town of Scarsdale). They Pennysaver also contains "Help wanted" ads for nanny and household positions (live in and live out). Most require a clean drivers license. Many families supply the car.

Many families will only hire through a nanny agency that does a thorough background check. You might want to contact some of them (probably in White Plains) and see if they feel your daughter would have the necessary qualifications. They require personal references as well as references from families for whom she provided baby-sitting services. You should start gathering all of these now if she is going to try that route. I hope she drives because the areas where the hiring families live are usually not served by public transportation.

Good luck!
Jennie

Unfortunately, a car is not in the picture. She does drive, has CPR, Life Guarding, First Aid and Fitness Certifications. She was a camp counselor at a Christian Sports camp the past 3 summers so has clearances. And she can waitress. So we're hoping she will find some extra work. We're heading there now to check things out. I'll try to look for a Pennysaver and if I don't find one, I'll let you know.

Thanks for all this info!

I went to the College of New Rochelle (CNR), my husband went to Iona, and worked at CNR for 15 years. We lived in New Ro for quite a while before moving to CT. Check on student housing. Iona has had huge growth over the past few years, and actually has some students living on campus at CNR, the last I knew and there was a free shuttle between the two schools.

Iona borders New Ro's "north end" which is very affluent, but also borders the downtown which has come a long way in recent years with Iona's expansion, but still can be somewhat seedy. As with all things Westchester, rents will be high. Check with CNR's housing office too--that campus is in a more residential part of town--quieter, safer and not quite as expensive as the North End. There are lots of large, older homes there that have been split into apartments and student-appropriate rooms.

Good luck!

I grew up in New Rochelle. (You knew you would find someone on TUG who did eventually!) While there are parts that are very nice (mostly near the water), I think it more of a "solid middle class" town and don't really see it as "nanny country" although perhaps it's changed. On the other hand, neighboring Scarsdale is very wealthy and I'm sure there are lot of families looking for nannies.

We got the Pennysaver when I was growing up...maybe it was the one for the Scarsdale zip code which we had since we lived in North New Rochelle (zip code for Scarsdale is 10583). Check that one out.

P.S. If you haven't yet heard the nickname for Iona College, PM me...lol!!

There's more than one -- He he he!
And there's a certain John Denver song that if you change the lyrics . . .

Thanks for these tips. We returned at 2 AM with a round trip in one day! UGH! She's probably going to take the internship (very impressive athletic department where she'll work in new Rec center) and got lists of housing and a place to hunt for jobs.

Side note: We looked at a 1 bedroom apt in a house that they were asking $1800 a month including utilities. Typical college non-aesthetic housing. Can you say, "We Pass"!? Unbelievable.

Still open to any and all contacts and ideas! Tuggers are super!

If you care to specify the highest rent your daughter can afford, I will look at the real estate section of our newspaper each day. Also, people sometimes place ads on the bulletin boards at local supermarkets.

Don't forget to check Craig's list. They seem to have a lot of listings for furnished rooms or apartment shares. She will probably need a roomate or two to make it affordable.

If you need any advice about an address or neighborhood, I'll be glad to give you advice. I've lived in the area all my life.

Good luck!

Hi Jennie,

She'd like to pay zero!! This is a first for her = paying for rent! Actually, she is talking to a family where she may trade child care for a live-in situation. If that doesn't work, we're on to plan B. She likes the idea of this type of a situation as it would be a win-win for her as she knows No One as potential roommate. If you see in the paper or on a bulletin board of anyone who is interested in this type of arrangement, please let me know. She will not have a car but drives. She was a camp counselor for 3 summers and is a certified fitness instructor, with CPR, Red Cross and Lifeguard certification. Almost fluent in French, conversational in Italian. And she can ballroom dance and loves to read, if you know some family where this might be a fit.

Yes they did, but they divorced and Laura changed her name to Mary and moved to Minneapolis and claimed she was forever single.

He on the other hand became a chimney sweep for a brief period in the 60's. Then he went to medical school, became a successful doctor and solved many high profile murder cases in the 90's.

I thought she probably ran off with Alan Brady and maybe he and Sally Rogers hooked up or even Millie Helper! :D
