Seriously, though, New Rochelle is a very expensive community, as is most of Westchester County. There is quite a bit of student housing surroundingt Iona College. Definitely contact the college by phone to see what might be available.
Your daughter will probably have to consider sharing an apartment with other students, or rent a single room in a two-family house. There are a few sections of New Rochelle (and neighboring towns Mt. Vernon and Yonkers) that have low income areas with high crime so you really need someone to guide you as to where to look.
There are some nice, safe areas of the north Bronx with two family homes that will be cheaper than Westchester. Usually 2-4 have their own room on the second floor and share the kitchen and one or two bathrooms. There's one area in particular, Woodlawn, where many Irish people do this. There is bus transportation from that area to Iona.
Also, there are a lot of different types of housing arrangements advertised on Craig's List. Check the Bronx, Yonkers, New Rochelle, Eastchester, Scarsdale, and White Plains.
There's also Pennysaver magazines covering those areas. They are delivered with the regular postal mail, usually on Saturday. I can sned them to you, if you'd like. (I live in the neighboring town of Scarsdale). They also contain "Help wanted" ads for nanny and household positions. Most require a clean drivers license. Many families supply the car.
Many families will only hire through a nanny agency that does a thorough background check. You might want to contact some of them (probably in White Plains) and see if they feel your daughter would have the necessary qualifications. They require personal references as well as references from families for whom she provided baby-sitting services. You should start gathering all of these now if she is going to try that route. I hope she drives because the areas where the hiring families live are usually not served by public transportation.
Good luck!
