So DW calls from the other room, "You have to come rescue the squirrel! He's stuck on the Whirl-a-Squirrel!". I did rescue him, but not before I took this video:

The bird feeder is designed so when there's too much weight on the perch, it will start spinning. The red squirrel is smaller than the gray squirrels and he figured out that he could tiptoe around the perch without it spinning. While chowing down on the seed, he must have gone too far out on the perch and got his paw stuck in it. I ran to get the camera and caught this video before I went out to rescue him. He had trouble walking a straight line for awhile before he made an escape up the tree. I doubt he'll be back.

Poor baby. I wonder how long it took for him to recover? A movie after that shows how a squirrel climbs on a pole. We don't have that many here but we have foxes now and no animal is safe outside anymore.

I used a broom handle to stop it from spinning and he dropped off. Within a couple of seconds of staggering around on the ground, he scurried straight up the tree.

We came out one morning and found one swimming in our pool after being thrown off our feeder! Took the leaf skimmer and scooped him out and he was gone! My wife and I had a good laugh over that. Never had it happen again.

We had a similar feeder (Yankee Flipper) and the squirrels wore it out within a year. I think they took riding it as a personal challenge.

For those of you that may have been concerned that the squirrel was injured or traumatized by the incident, don't worry. He was back again today:

We know it's the same one, because there's only one red squirrel in the neighborhood. All the rest are gray.

He reminds of the people who just don't learn from their mistakes. I'm glad he is well, but I I hope he doesn't get stuck like that again.

Oh, I love the little red squirrels. They are the natives to this area, (PNW) while the grey squirrels are much bigger and the invaders and often fight or chase off the reds. (I like them, too, actually, but am always cheered to see any red guys around) Therefore, the red squirrel population is declining. And must say, that video is priceless!

Maybe it's the type of squirrel who says, like your kids just finishing a crazy ride at the amusement park,
"Hey Dad, can we do that again?"
