I am taking a cruise that ends in Ft. Lauderdale and want to stay in a Starwood property for a few days after the cruise. Does anyone have a suggestion which is the best to be near shopping, beach, eating etc. I am renting a car, but have never stayed in either place so don't know the area at all. Any help that you can give me will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Vicki

You should check out the Starwood board on Flyertalk. You will find reviews of all of the options.

The Atlantic looks awesome, but I've never been there. It would be my vote, though. We've stayed at the Diplomat. There's no beach there (for either property). The St Regis will no longer be the St Regis after Aug 11 so don't book that one. :)

I would recommend the Atlantic. It is right on the beach and is a beautiful upscale hotel with terrific rooms, a pool overlooking the ocean, and a nice bar and restaurant. There are several hotels, restaurants and bars within walking distance.

my favorite hotel in all of florida is the westin diplomat, right on the beach, gorgeous pool, near shopping, great restaurants. stay there 2-3 times a year. it is absolutely amazing.

Thanks a lot for your suggestions. I will check out the reviews on Flyertalk. The Westin Diplomat and the Atlantic are the two that I was thinking about from just from looking at the Starwood site. I appreciate your response.

First of all I like to say, I love my Starwood Timeshares, but I also love to Cruise!
When we cruise (which is twice a year) and it's leaving out of Fort Lauderdale.
We like to stay at the Atlantic hotel. It's a small Boutique hotel and most of the rooms are pretty good size for being a hotel. All the rooms have a small kitchenette. So, IF a big if, you wanted to cook something or heat it up in the microwave it's there for you. There is also a small frig too.

At the Atlantic:
Traffic isn't too bad and it all valet parking ($27.00 a day)
The strip is just a few block down the street which is close to the Cruise Ship Port.
The pool is on the 5 floor ocean side (morning sun and by 2:00 PM it's in the shade)
Spa and fitness room is also on the 5th floor.

At the Diplomat hotels:
Personally it's too far south from the Ports and there seems to be more Traffic around that area.
It's a very large hotel compared to the Atlantic.
The Pool is pretty cool and there is not much beach (morning sun)

Shopping:
Check out the Sawgrass Mall in Plantation - it can be an all day outlet shopping experience and there is some nice restaurants out there too.

Have fun and I wish I could go with you.

3rdPlanet: Thanks for the Sawgrass Mall suggestion and your info about the hotels. That sounds like something we would really enjoy. :)
