Never been to Hawaii. Considering a late Dec 2012 Honeymoon. Any suggestions appreciated.

Auger,

Your honeymoon? If so, congratulations!

All of the Hawaii Marriotts are lovely, an important question will be how easily can they be accessed -- are you renting a room from an existing owner or seeking to trade in? and if you're trading in, are you using a Marriott in trade?

If you're trading in, I believe the easiest trades will be smaller units (Studio, perhaps a 1BR) at either Marriott Ko Olina or Marriott Kauai Beach Club. I've stayed at Ko Olina a couple of times and it is a lovely property on Oahu -- but very remote, which is good and bad. If you're a night owl, you won't find much to do at night. I've not been to KBC and others will have to chime in, but I believe it's easily accessible via trade.

I love Maui Ocean Club and it would be fabulous for a honeymoon -- it has a beautiful property on a great beach -- walking distance to good shops and restaurants. It's a great great spot -- if you're trading with a Marriott unit, then I would think a trade in early December will be successful to get into Maui Ocean Club.

Please give us a little more information and we'll see if we can be helpful?

Best,

Greg

The answer depends on what you are looking for in a honeymoon.

We have several friends and family members who spent their honeymoon at Kauai Beach Club, and I think a 1BR unit at KBC would be a great choice. The resort is serene and beautiful with a grand feeling to it. And the island of Kauai is unbeatable in natural beauty. Also consider Kauai Lagoons (Kalanipu'u).

Wahohai only has 2BR units which would be overkill for a newlywed couple.

Depending on the time of year, Maui Ocean Club can be very active (even crowded) with lots of kids and families. Not as serene as Kauai Beach Club.

Ko Olina is also very nice but not close to restaurants and shopping, and far from Honolulu and the north shore beaches.

If you are looking for the holiday period, I'd suggest putting in a request for any of the resorts and seeing what you match to, since it will be hard to trade into a week 51 or 52. I think you'd have a wonderful time on any of the islands.

While Ko'Olina may be a bit remote, I think that enhances the property, and there is plenty to see/do on the island. I think it would be a great honeymoon destination, esp. if you've never been to Hawaii before, since Oahu is such a varied island- history, "typical Hawaii" environs like Waikiki, remote secluded beaches, etc.. The lagoons at Ko'Olina are wonderful both for using and for romantic strolls.

Congrats, btw!

The only one I would NOT recommend is the Kauai Beach Club. I would rather stay at one of the Marriott hotels than at KBC. Others, of course, will disagree. Tastes differ.

Our neighbors speak highly of the Marriott hotel in Wailea on Maui. Ive never been but have been in the general area of the island and it looks nice.

Maui has to be one of the best Honeymoon spots. Of course we likely think that because we spent most of our honeymoon there. We stayed at the Westin. Kaanapali is a fabulous resort area with the great boardwalk along the beach. Just fantastic.

We agree on this. We also spent part of our honeymoon at what is now the Westin. It was the Maui Surf then and only one year old. This was in 1973 and there were only four hotels on Kaanapali--the Sheraton Maui, Royal Lahaina, Kaanapali Beach Hotel and the Maui Surf. There were no timeshares, no condos, no Whalers Village and it was beautiful. It is a lot different now but still fabulous.

The one with the best bed.

That would be the Heavenly Bed at the Westin. I am thinking that the Westin timeshares also have the Heavenly Beds?

As someone said earlier, it depends on your needs.

If money is no object, I would stay at the Four Seasons Koele on Lanai. If you are restricting it to Marriott Vacation Club properties on Hawaii then my answer would be Kauai Beach Club. It is self contained on a nice bay, Kauai Lagoons is a nice golf course, there are enough restaurants to get you through the week, and you can take day trips to Poi Pu, Waimea Canyon, or Princeville/Hanalai Bay. And... although you won't be alone by any means, it is a smaller, more quaint setting than Kaanapali or the SW coast of Oahu. The units might not be the hippest or newest in the vacation club collection, but they are on the hotel property and right on the beach. We have been there 2 or 3 times and found it to provide a nice peaceful base to vacation from. There are plenty of hikes, kayak rentals, and waterfalls within 30 minutes. Heck, if you have a few extra bucks and can extend beyond your timeshare week, you can really pamper yourself for a couple nights up at the beautiful Princeville Resort, too. (And if you are golfers, you must play the Prince course!)

The Westin timeshare property at Princeville on the North Shore is just beautiful. We stayed there for our 10 year anniversary and it is just gorgeous and romantic. You will have beach privileges at the Princeville resort which is many times more expensive than the t/s property for just a hotel room. There is a Westin shuttle that takes you there and it's so great! This is where George Clooney and Johnny Depp were staying when we visited. Very nice place and close to Hanalei, a beautiful little beach town with an amazing bayside beach.

I'll add my backing for Maui (and therefore the Ocean Club).

Like others have said it will depend on what sort of environment you're looking for - quiet/just relaxing by the pool, going out a lot to the early hours or a mixture of both.

For our needs we find Maui to be the best mix as it isn't desperately overbuild like parts of Oahu (IMO) so you still get an idyllic feel of being on a pacific island but there is still an almost endless list of activities you can do and great restaurants to try out. The night life dies out reasonably early but then it does that everywhere else (with the exception of Honolulu/Waikiki).

So, to sum up:

If you want lots of relaxation and aren't too bothered about activities -Kauai

If you want to have a pretty active nightlife the it has to be Oahu (although if you go to Ko'olina you'll have a good length trip into town so you may want to consider a different resort).

If you want a mixture you can't go wrong with Maui. We love it, we go back every year and haven't regretted our ridiculously overpriced purchase at the MOC once :D
