We are going to be in Florida in the beginning of June 2009.

We would love some advice about which island is best for kids (girls 10 and 12) and where to stay? Is a week too long?

Any info will be greatly appreciated as we're travelling from Australia and have never been there before.

Thanks a lot.

Can you clarify what you mean by which island in Florida so we can best help you? Marco,Sanibel islands are on the gulf coast and then there are the the Florida keys. I know it can be confusing if not from here.

Go to google Florida maps for an idea. These places are attached to the mainland by teeny bridges so I never think of them as islands like the carribean. Many are also called keys like Siesta Key or Marathon key.

Do you just want to know where to go in general with the girls? What airport are you flying into?

Do you want to see Disney and Seaworld or Universal Theme Parks?

Many of our beaches are on islands. They're barrier islands connected to the mainland by causeways. We seldom think of them as islands. When you look at a Florida map, you can often identify these barrier islands because the town there will have "Beach" in its name and usually there's another town on the mainland with the same name, but without "Beach". One example in Florida - Melbourne Beach on a barrier island and Melbourne on the mainland :D

Or were you actually thinking of traveling from Florida to the Bahamas or the Caribbean?

Sorry folks - I was actually referring to the Caribbean.

However, which is more worthwhile - the Caribbean or the Keys - say Key West (because I don't know any others!)

Also, do you think it's more worthwhile to go to the Caribbean or New York - weird question I know! But we'll be in Baltimore and Florida (and other places).

Thanks a lot

I loved Aruba for my kids...and the Bahamas was nice (if you stayed at Atlantis).

Which is more worthwhile? Caribbean or New York? It is very hard to compare the two. You are from Australia, so I would think you've seen a lot of beautiful beaches. New York is a totally different experience. There is so much to do for children. I'm sure your kids would find it very exciting. They are girls, so they would probably love the shopping! If they've never been to NY, that would be my choice. However, if you'd rather have a more relaxing vacation, I agree that Aruba is very kid friendly.

I'm thinking NY too. You're right. We do have magnificent beaches here. We're also stopping for a week in Hawaii at the end of the trip.

I've been to Hawaii before but the kids haven't. I've also been to NY and it really is amazing.

Thanks, you've helped me make up my find (and save a few dollars!)
