Tuggers -- heading to DSV soon and they have offered Morton's Steak House $100 dinner certificate or 10,000 Marriott reward points to sit on promo. Which do you think is the best? They also offered Pacifica Restaurant $100 but never heard of them.

Since the points are getting so devalued, I am having a difficult making a choice  .

10,000 points will get you one night in a category 2 hotel.

I think I'd take the $100 dinner.

MRPs are worth about one and a half cents each, maybe a little more. Therefore, the 10,000 points on the surface seems to be worth more than the dinner. I think it depends upon whether you'd use the points for a larger reward. If not, the dinner is probably a better bet.

Unless you would normally go and spend $100 at Morton's, I would choose the points. You can probably find a Cat 2 hotel that runs about $169/nt plus tax and come out better. Don't forget you can also buy the points for $125.

If, however you were planning on going to a very nice restaurant/steakhouse anyhow, go ahead and take the voucher.
Your dinner will be that much more enjoyable. :D

P.S. - You can always tell the preview signup rep that you will do the tour for 15K MR points and then sit back & wait for his call.

Cathy,

Morton's is a great restaurant and I would probably take that. Just keep in mind that your dinner for two will probably run higher than $100. I would estimate about $150 if you each had one glass of wine with dinner including tip. Their website probably has a menu with pricing.

I vote for pts, esp if you wish to take make use of MRP's in the future, and with the looming devaluation on the 14th of Jan pick up MRP's which ever way you can! We are planning three Marriott previews from now through July ! :D

Good luck collecting the points on all three. Marriott has limitations - like one per year.

Limits

The limits usually apply to taking the tours at the same location. I've taken several tours in the same year-- but at different resorts.

Agree completely
Points
Since I would have to spend $10,000 to get 10000 points it's a no brainer. Taking the Waiohai tour and adding to my stash today,
Charge the Morton's dinner on your Marriott card and get more points LOL

Mortons had a special running through March: $49.50 per person. (check their website). We just took advantage of it and it was delicious--a lot of food. However, after wine, tax and tip it was considerably more $, but still a good value.

I am sitting at DSVI overlooking the golf course as I write this. Sunny and 80s today. Gorgeous. I've heard it's 17 below and 6 inches of snow back home in Minnesota.

We used the Marriott dining for two certificate at the JW Tuscany this week, and the food and service was excellent.

We always take the points. I don't place the value on what I can get for 10,000, I think about what I can get when I collect of few of those preview points..

You can take more than one preview per year but not in the same location.

We have discussed this on Tug before. Marriott usually allows this but the T&C says one per year. Here is a typical T&C.

Eligibility:
One offer per household, no groups. Annual income of $75,000 or more is required. Employees of Marriott International, Inc., its affiliated companies, their immediate families and current Owners of Marriott Vacation Club properties are ineligible for this offer. Guests are limited to purchasing 3 preview packages within a lifetime. Guests may not purchase this preview package if having attended another Marriott Vacation Club tour and sales presentation within the past 12 months. Guests may only return to Marriott’s OceanWatch with a preview package if 2 or more years have passed since last Marriott’s OceanWatch preview date. Guests may not have more than one active package at a time.

P.S. - Cathy, hold out for more points!

Nope, I did three in 2007, one in 2008, and three again in 2009.

I already called all three resorts for 2009 and they all ok with what I am doing.

I love Mortons! Point dollar per value it's probably worth it doing that, unless you need the Marriott points. As someone else stated, they have a deal right now.. two people for $99. Avoid the extras (you don't need it! that deal is a ton of food, I'm going again for it in a week), and you can walk out of there after tax and tip for about an extra $30 and it will be a meal you remember.

To buy 10,000 MR points from Marriott would cost you $125.

This T&C is for paid packages

where you pay a reduced rate to stay at the resort, then do the tour and presentation.

We have discussed this on Tug before. Marriott usually allows this but the T&C says one per year. Here is a typical T&C.

Value Decisions

Since you can purchase MR points for $125.00, and the card for Morton's is valued at $100.00, it would appear that either way you go, it would be a personal choice to enjoy a nice meal, or use toward a Marriott reward.

The difference in value is only $25.00.

oops sorry didn't see the reply. But yes she's correct, it's for two. It's been extended several times now. Last time (ending last year) they called it their anniversary special I believe. But it's been a popular special they run periodically for years.. but this time it's been running almost back to back for over a year now. This time it's guaranteed till the end of March, but if it goes away it will probably come back after 1-2 weeks again like it keeps doing. The economy just isn't doing good enough, they need the promo to keep people coming. Otherwise it's just too expensive!

I think I'd take the $100 dinner.

$100 at Morton's won't get you very far. I'd take the points, which are worth about $150.
