Sister bought a Wyndham trial point package. Due to unexpected circumstances, she had to cancel twice and points expire 12/31. The only thing she can get is 2 nights in San Diego. We want to spend 2 more nights in a hotel. Have SPG & HH points I can use. Looking at the Gaslamp district. Any suggestions/advice?

If the Wyndham reservation is at Harbor Lights -- I'd suggest the other two nights be in another location -- my preference would be near the water.

If the Wyndham reservation is the Oceanside location -- then I'd move closer into the city for the other 2 nights. If you have a car, you don't want to pay for the expensive parking in Gaslamp. It is walkable from several other locations -- or by using public transit.

I will mention what I usually do when this is brought up. If price is no object, I'd stay at the Hotel del Coronado. :D

I know many people like the Gaslamp district, but we found it kind of tacky and rundown when we were in San Diego in May.

I've never been willing (or able, for that matter) to pay for the Hotel Del -- but I would definitely second most any place on Coronado Island.

The Wyndham is on Camino Del Rio South. Don't know if that is one of the Wyndham's you mentioned. Would like the other two days to be somewhere that we can walk around. Forget Hotel Del Coronado.

There is a great trolley system in San Diego. We used it when we were there. We were in a Wyndham timeshare a few blocks from Gaslamp District. The trolley got to a lot of places. So you might want to look for someplace where you have access to that. Our closest station was City College.

And now for something completely different... We have been known to stay a few nights at Old Town Inn. Www.oldtown-inn.com/ nothing fancy, but family owned, good free breakfast, across el Camino from the trolley stop & Old Town State Park where San Diego started. Lots of great Mexican restaurants and touristy walk around areas. Also fairly low prices and many if not most rooms have kitchenette.

I suggest the Embassy Suites downtown. You can use your hhonors points there. It isn't right in the heart of the Gaslamp district, but close to Seaport Village, the waterfront, and many restaurants. You can walk several blocks in any direction without too much trouble. That isn't the case with Gaslamp.

If she is staying at the Wyndham on the harbor, you'll be a couple blocks away.

I'm curious what you mean by this statement? We found you could walk just about anywhere, it just depended on how much walking you want to do.

fore something different there is a marina on shelter island that operates a boatel.. you could stay on a yacht for a few days.. No Public Transportation but plenty of restaurants in the area

Caminio Del Rio South is an area known as Hotel Circle. The bad news is that you will need a car. The other bad news is that you are right next to Interstate 8 if you are bothered by noise. The good news is that you have easy access to about anything being close to the freeway and it's kind of a central location. You will need a car and are about 15 min from downtown, the zoo, Mission Bay and Mission Beach. It's a very safe area with quite a few restaurants (although none memorable).

With your HH points in order the Embassy Suite, Hilton Bayfront, and Hilton Gaslamp are close walking distance to the Gaslamp, Seaport Village and on the bay.

With your SPG points in order the US Grant, Westin and W are all downtown and nice hotels.

When I worked for the airlines, we used to stay at Hotel Solamar. It is between the ball park and a block from the Main Street of the Gaslamp area. It is a little trendy and not what folks in their 60s like, or where I would want to be at today. The crowd there is the 30-50 year olds and they have a nice pool on the roof and used to have a nice happy hour every night with free wine and beer. The little red shuttle train is nearby and it is easy to get to old town or other places around San Diego. There are a few big name hotels near by, like Marriott and Hilton. I am sure they are all pretty pricy, but be ready to spend money if staying in that area. Embassy Suites is probably the best.

I think the hotels down around the airport on the harbor are where I would want to stay. Old Town would be good too.

My vote is for shelter island too as you can walk around and there are several restaurants too. Staying on a yacht sounds interesting but there are several hotels and even a Best Western so not too expensive. There used to be a restaurant that would take a boat out several times in the evening for a short ride but that was a long time ago. San Diego is a great place to visit and has the best climate in CA. :)

I mean safely. There is still a lot of criminal activity in the surrounding area. They did do a very good job of cleaning up the Gaslamp area years ago, but it just pushed out the criminals to the surrounding streets. I would never walk on any of the surrounding streets at night. YMMV

Thanks for clearing that up. We did some walking at night, but usually it was from the trolley station back to the timeshare. Again, not the greatest neighborhood, but not awful.

Since you have HH points, consider the Hilton Beach and Tennis Resort on Mission Bay. It is very nice and is centrally located. Good neighborhood. You'll need a car.

Thanks for all the help but we decided it's not worth it. Airfare/FF seats way too expensive. We'll just do local things and go into NYC and see a play and the tree.

Spending time in NYC. Poor you. ;)

I grew up not far from the city and we went in at Christmastime every year. I love NY. It's one of the few things up North that I miss living in the South.

I hear ya. When we lived in California we'd go into San Francisco at some point around Christmas. Not quite NYC, but still very special.

I must say though, Santa Fe does a very nice holiday season as well. Completely different from a big city, but enchanting.

Look at the Marriott on Coronado. It is right near the ferry landing. Can rent bikes and enjoy the island. Great view of downtown San Diego. Can ferry in to the downtown area to enjoy nightlife and gas lamp area etc. We live here in San Diego and have done that a few times for special weekends.

I know you already cancelled. Next time!!
