When are points supposed to be deposited into a new RCI account?

Hello all! I have been lurking around here for a few months and finally decided to take the plunge and buy some timeshares (on the resale market). Thanks for all the great information!

I have purchased two separate weeks at Swan Mountain Resort in Dillon, CO. One has 60,000 annual RCI points, and the other has 56,500 annual points. The maintenance fees for each are $620/year.

It looks like everything has gone through. I now have an RCI account as of November 1. One of the timeshares came with the 2015 points, and those have been deposited into my RCI account.

I have talked to the RCI representative and the resort manager and they say the 2016 points are due to be deposited on Nov 1st, 2016, but the maintenance fees are due in January 2016.

Does this sound correct? It seems to me that I should get my 2016 points at the beginning of the year, not after I have owned my RCI membership for an entire year. What has everybody else experienced with a new purchase? It seems like I should have waited until January to buy so I would get my points right away.

Thanks!

The reason for the dates is so you don't get short changed for your usage on your 2015 points. Your account set up date is your use year date. You can borrow your points one year ahead (if your resort doesn't require your MF's to be prepaid) or as of Jan 1, 2016 if your resort does require the MF's to be prepaid before you can use the points. This way if you use your points from now until Nov 2016 for this time, it will be considered borrowing your points. If you book something from now until Oct 31 2016, for something later than Nov 1 2016, you will be using it during your use year.

It will be confusing for the first couple years, then you won't even notice it. Each member's use year is different. For you, it sounds like:

2015 Use Year: Nov 1 2015 - Oct 31 2016
2016 Use Year: Nov 1 2016 - Oct 31 2017

Once you've been in for a couple years it doesn't matter much. You have 2015 points you can use now. You can borrow from 2016 use year if you need to.

Thanks for the help! The resort and RCI seem to always just say "I don't know, ask the other person".

It does seem like a way for RCI to get you to pay for an extra year, but I suppose in the long run it won't really matter.
