What would you do about my (6600 DC) 2020 points from 2018?

I just canceled two big Hawaiian reservations for August travel. Sunce the points were banked from 2018 use year— they went back into my account—and they will have to be used by December 2020.

I have no way to use all these points by the end of the year. What can I do with them?

If I make a new reservation using all these points and cancel it —then the points will be good until 2021 but within 120 days.

Do you think it makes sense to do that? To make reservations for 60 days or less and then cancel them?
Then the points would go into holding but I could use them until 2021? I’m really mixed up!

You and I have the same problem, but mine is about half the number of points. I'm still planning on using mine, but that could change. I also think that somehow or another Marriott will figure out how to solve for this if the ability to travel continues to be limited. The 120 day window is actually a pretty good deal if you can go to places that aren't as high demand as say Hawaii (I know that's where you wanted to go).

.

You can rent your points for a 2020 reservation (as long as you are willing to make it for someone) and place the reservation into their name. Go to:

www.VacationPointExchange.com

Be sure to state "all sales are final" and advise them to purchase their own travel insurance.

You should be able to unload your points quickly and easily this way, salvage some dollars and be 100% done with them once and for all.

Yes that makes sense.
Find a reservation for soon, then cancel it and your points will go into a holding account to be booked 120 days in advance and expire 12/31/21.
Nothing to lose by doing this.
Good luck.

You also might be able to use them for cash type options like cruises, Collete, resort credit and to pay for next years travel insurance if you tend to purchase it. Which is best depends on your likelihood of travel to places you can get at 120 days or less during the time needed. Remember there will be more competition the next few years as many of us have kicked points down the road we normally would not have. I must admit that I am not certain when some of these options would expire if you elect them or the timing the options will have to be used for but all are worth considering depending on the answers. And if you end up with holding accounts points you can still use them later for at least part of the cash options.

In the olden days I would use Points in Holding first. Boy have things changed. Now I have to use expiring points first. I would never have canceled so many high point vacations had it not been for the virus. I am taking a loss on so many trips-- and I know I am NOT alone.
