It has been a long time trying to execute, but today it finally came to fruition. Today we were finally able to deliver meals for the homeless. There were a lot of fits and starts trying to find an outlet and then sourcing enough food to feed as many as 40. With a few disappointments we were finally able to source 100 lbs of proteins along with all we need to support that. Here are a few pictures of the operation in our kitchen. We planned to fill 4 catering trays. I filled the old crock pots and was surprised that we actually had enough food for 8 trays. This along with the apples and dessert bags we dropped off were 64 meals as they got 8 nice meals per tray and still have a tray and a half to fill in in the future. This process was started a few weeks ago when the need was 20 to 25 meals. As we delivered today the need is now over 50. At this point we have enough to do this for 4 to 5 more weeks @ one day a week. With luck we can also go on after that.
I am very lucky to have a comfortable home, lots of food, and a fantastic partner. When my wife got the email from the church with the plea to help, it hit home how lucky we are and how hard some people have it. Imagine not only having no home to shelter in but also your normal food source is gone. While we are working through the Newark Empowerment Center @ the Newark United Methodist Church there are many community kitchens that are trying to fill a big need. Please consider a donation to these small groups that are doing herculean work for the community.
Two of the three crockpots one of the 3 batches in the rice cooker and the topping simmering on the stove
The last crockpot with the 8 trays ready for filling.
Some of the apples along with the dessert bags
One of the trays of chicken with salsa and carrots.
Please feel free to post other rays of sunshine in this dark time.
