I noticed that bagels are #1. But nobody ever mentions bialys. Bialys just don't get any love. (And that includes my spellchecker, which immediately changed the word "bialys" into "billy's.")

I grew up in Queens, one of the five boroughs of NY. There was a bagel shop on my route when walking home from school. I would stop in to see what was fresh out of the oven, sometimes bagels and sometimes bialys, but always a warm treat.

This article is also seriously remiss in not mentioning knishes.

So if you're in NY, see if you can find a fresh bialy. And a place that makes fresh knishes.

There's a frozen bakery brand called 'What's a Bialy?' that we see and grin at at the supermarket. We don't eat bread at home, but we definitely enjoy a bialy when we visit =)

They at least mention dim sum under brunch, with Chinese food its own category. A full third of our meals in the city are dim sum, I'm sure.

I live on Long Island. Our pizza and bagels are just as good as in the city. Chinese food? Not so much.

The bagels stores are now selling things that look like bialys and calling them "flagels" - flat bagels.

There was a huge fire in the Gabila Knish factory a few years ago and knishes became hard to find. Thank goodness the supply is back. If you slice up a Kosher hot dog and put in in between the flat halves of a knish with spicy brown mustard, it is a fine lunch.

I lived in and around NYC my whole life with our main home in NJ and a studio apartment in Manhattan. Restaurants (that have not closed due to COVID-19) are really good, especially in Manhattan. Cheaper (all relative) eats - plenty of pizza (recommend "Kiss My Slice" - two locations; Bagels - recommend three "Pick a Bagel," "Essa Bagel," "H & H Bagel," all good up to your tastes etc. and there are many more. Restaurants - if you like anything you can find it in NYC especially really good French dependent on your budget. Lower priced with a reasonable prix-fixe, especially for lunch, in the heart of Manhattan for instance is La Bonne (walk uptown on fifth avenue and make a left on 55 street - halfway up towards sixth avenue on the left side of the street. If you are a tourist you have to walk up or down from the park on 5th avenue. Any part of the city has excellent restaurants. Once shows, cultural attractions etc. open up again (hopefully) and tourism gets back to normal plenty of great eats, just search the web for suggestions and keep your eyes open as you walk around.
