I have an enrolled week that I have exchanged for year 2023 points. We are using these to visit Aruba Ocean Club in 2023. I now have 500 points left over. I know I can bank these into 2024, but I want to use the week at my home resort in 2024, so doing so is just putting off the inevitable, loosing the points.

The question is, how can I make use of these extra points beyond just banking them? Are there ways to use points for, say, resort purchases (food and drink, etc.)? Can they be used for activities (bike rentals, booze cruises, etc.)? Can they be applied somehow to a Marriott hotel stay? Are 500 points worth renting? Curious what your thoughts are and what has worked for you!

We use our left over expiring points for Resort Credits for food & drink and activities.
They still have to be used by the expiry date though

If you log onto MVC and go under use points, then explorer collection you can see what else you can do with points.

For resort credit 325 points gives you $110 dollars to use at the locations they list for your specific resort

You can also use them towards car rental on Avis or budget- 500 points gets you $150 e-cert.

Can rent more points and take another trip.

An extra night at Aruba Ocean Club

Resort Credit - I believe 325 points gets you $110 resort credit (or something like that)

Car rental certificate - 500 points gets you $150 certificate

Airline miles - 500 points gets you 8000 miles

Explorer collection hotel stay

Rent them out.

Travel insurance.

Just used 3100 holding account points at Grande Ocean. Had to borrow a small amount to round up. Paid for the room charges like bikes and sent the ladies to the Spa for a massage. Used the gift cards I got at 20% off to cover the rest of the charges for the Spa.

Some great ideas here on alternate ways to utilize some leftover points! Thanks everyone.

One follow-up, how exactly do you pay for room charges and the like with points? Is this done at the front desk when reconciling charges for the week?

You need to request resort credit in advance of check-in. See the instructions in post 3 above. This only works at certain resorts, and not all charges are eligible. But i have used this a few times for leftover or holding account points.

Once you have the resort credit added to your reservation, then the concierge will need to "activate" it after you check-in. I expect this process could be easier, but I suspect MVC does not want it to be super easy to use...

Here's the deets on using the resort credit at Aruba Ocean club, since you mentioned having a ressy there.....

Don't forget that you can also borrow points, so banking into the following year doesn't mean that they are just orphaned. Also, you would be amazed at what 500 points buys you in off and shoulder seasons.

Good points Big Matt......Great deals for this time of year, and it's a GREAT time of year to be there.......we get extra time there by whatever means and love it.

For example: using hypothetical info on MVC under Helpful Tools > Points calculator
(all 7-night stays below)....and the other HH resorts are similar.
Grande Ocean & Barony......Jan 7-14 Sat-Sat = 825 DC points.............. (75 weeknights, 225 weekend nights)
Grande Ocean & Barony......Feb 11-18 Sat-Sat = 2050 DC points.......... (200 weeknights, 525 weekend nights)
Harbour Point......................Jan 7-14 Sat-Sat = 400 DC points...............(50 weeknights, 75 weekend nights)
Harbour Point......................Feb 11-18 Sat-Sat = 675 DC points..............(75 weeknights, 150 weekend nights)

Even renting DC points, you can stay a full week at Hilton Head's Harbour Point for around $270 cash (68 cents per point). That's amazing.

You da man..........and since we'll be there at that time, I think a celebration dinner is in order.

That's an amazing deal you've put together. I am especially impressed with the new renovations at Heritage Club.....the walk-through with you this past year
was quite a treat, and I now view that resort as a hidden gem........Never considered staying there before, but I certainly will now.
And the location, altho not near the beach, is beautiful------adjacent to the famous Harbour Town Golf Links in a most quiet and tucked-away spot.
It's steps away from the harbor and beautiful boats, and walkable to several restaurants, especially the brand new Quarterdeck, the new behemoth seafood restaurant
overlooking the harbor and inland waterway with 180 degree views (and 2 bars!), located at the Harbour Town Lighthouse.

Back to the lower DC point requirements of the off-season HH resorts-------What made that happen is the sheer popularity and love for Hilton Head
and the incredible DEMAND for the prime weeks.
Therefore the DC point requirements are high for those Gold and Platinum weeks, which subsequently caused Marriott to counterbalance
and lower the supposed "off-season" requirements, hence the Dec, Jan, Feb nights becoming steals. I like it.
We don't use points for Gold and Platinum stays, but we sure do for the other stays.
We adore Jan and Feb time at HH....Believe me, the island is hopping.....no true off-season anymore at HH....and the restaurants are almost as full as at other times.
Frankly it's more relaxing, and we even have time for biking and walking ....and my wife plays tennis daily with a bunch of snow-bird friends we've become very close to,
who come down and spend 10-12 weeks.......truly it's so much fun.

Marty,

I was under the impression that January/February were pretty rainy in Hilton Head, is that not the case? That is an interesting points opportunity, thank you for sharing!

Best,

Greg

It’s hit or miss Greg. I’ve been down there 3 times in Jan and had very nice weather except for a few days. Marty and his better half would know better tho since they spend a lot of time there in Jan and Feb

Best, Greg

Not for Jan/Feb..........for example, my wife is a tennis player and Jan & Feb are the months she loves being there to participate in the FREE daily clinics
which the two Grande Ocean tennis pros conduct. That time is wonderful for the 20-25+ participants who register and show up each morning.
Most of those friends are "snow birds" and return every year, going on 20 years now. It's awesome.
It's become a special camaraderie that brings everybody back year after year, and they adore it, and do many other activities together too.
If it were rainy then, the place would be empty! It does rain every now and then, but totally unpredictable and short-lived. As "jont" says, it's hit and miss.
We are usually there 2 weeks in January and 2 weeks in February EVERY year----no ownership weeks but we do use points or other extra means.
Actually more enjoyable than our several June weeks.

Hilton Head doesn't have a so-called "rainy season", such as we know to be characteristic of tropical or exotic locations like the Virgin Isles, Hawaii, or Aruba, etc.
For Hilton Head, there are 5 months that have higher average precipitation than January and February.
Far and away the rainiest month is August, and even then it's not like a set-in-stone cycle that is predictable every year in the standard definition
of a "rainy season", but more dependent on the randomly occurring high temperatures that summer can bring.
There are hot Augusts and there are really hot Augusts, but strangely enough we've experienced mild Augusts too,
and therefore the "summer showers" don't materialize so much.
We've run the gamut on weather at HH......very hot Augusts and mild Junes, or very hot Junes and mild Augusts. It's crazy.
July can have a string of over-95 degree temps that can last for 20 days, or it can rain every day for 2+ weeks, but it's never the same from year to year.
One never knows, but when it is rainy, it's usually a short afternoon shower rather than an all-day thing.
It's absolutely typical for all southern states, not just South Carolina.
Florida, for example, is much more predictable as to rain patterns that "stay on schedule"-----In the summer, rain and storm cells are ALWAYS crossing Florida,
usually in the afternoons.
Since they're fast-moving, the rain usually lasts an hour or so, and it's gone, and the sun comes out and you wouldn't know it even rained
except for the steamy aftermath.

See this precipitation chart for Hilton Head........Jan and Feb are truly hit & miss, with no real patterns.
Temps are all over the place too...it can be in the 30s or it can be in the 70s.

Are 500 points worth renting?

Regarding to this particular question, it depends what else you are considering. If you want to bank and use in 2024 that may be a better use than renting them out, if you need them. If you are considering a $150 certificate option, you are better off renting then and getting $330-$350 on vacationpointexchange.com. Not many people need just 500 points, but when I rent points, for example, I usually rent them in batches starting with 3000-5000 early on and then maybe another 1500 later in the usage year and later on I might rent 500-1000 if I need them. Prevents me from getting a large number upfront and having to worry how to use them later on since they can't be transferred.
