Mine is turned off by I have WOL setup so that I can remotely connect to it when I need it, so its not awake unless someone is on it/connected to it. It's connected to battery backup so it never gets unplugged.

I do if the house is going to be empty. I came home to a fried computer due to a lightening storm near our house several years ago. It wasn't the only thing that fried, either. I lost several electrical appliances.

Since then, I have a check sheet. I unplug every electrical appliance in the house except for lamps and the refrigerator. To make this easier, I have most on power strips so that I can just unplug the strip.

I also turn off the water to the washer. I have considered turning the water off at the curb so I won't have to worry about the icemaker, but so far I haven't done that.

I turn off the UPS that the computer and its peripherals are connected to, then I unplug the UPS. No need to risk exposing it to surges from a storm. Lost one UPS to a storm, though it thankfully protected the equipment that was connected to it.

I take mine with. ;)

And then I lock my work laptop in hubby's gun safe, so yes, it's totally unplugged. And we also unplug tv's, etc.

I usually shut them down and unplug the power strip(s) into which they're plugged. This disconnects the computer, printer, speakers, phone power, etc. Another one disconnects the TV, DVR, blueray, etc. This after losing phones, router, TV and other damage. The phone connection box mounted outside has been blown off twice and the wires from it back to the main lines fried once. The meter got damaged once as well.

We shut down and unplug all electronics. We flip some of the breakers that don't connect to anything that needs to be left on. That kills the hot water heater. We turn off the water outside the house.

Our next-door-neighbor returned from a trip to Hawaii to find a terrible mess when pipes in their basement burst while they were away.

So did our good friends from California. We were down in Cancun with them when they got a call from their cat sitter that a pipe in the kitchen had burst and part of the house was flooded. It was a rather unpleasant early end to their vacation :(
