So we are thinking we may want to cancel our May trip to Orlando and Marriott's Newport Coast in May. Odd split of weeks, but we live in Florida and my wife's friend would be coming down from Ohio to visit. We had a trade in to NCV a few years ago and had to cancel for some reason (hadn't bought air yet), so it seems that NCV will be the untouchable resort for us. I got another trade about a year ago using a studio in to a 2BR NCV over Memorial Week and I felt like I won the lottery. We would normally wait until closer in, but the 59 day window is fast approaching next week. Half our airfare is with Southwest, so we could easily get a credit to fly before January 2020. The other half is on United with miles, we would probably just forfeit unless they later offered up dropping the change fees and we could just redeposit the points. Here is the issue.

  • Marriott Grande Vista exchange - Checkin May 16th - The original deposit doesn't expire until 2022, so I think I am best just to do a free retrade since this is a Marriott DC enrolled week.
  • Marriott Newport Coast exchange - Checkin May 23rd - The original deposit expires June 2nd 2020, so I can't really retrade this out past then.
  • Neither week has ePlus on them.

The Grande Vista week seems pretty simple, I would just need to retrade before March 16th to something as far out as possible. Then I could use it to retrade somewhere else.

Is my only option for the Newport Coast exchange to cancel and get a cancellation replacement? It was an original studio deposit and we paid the $198 to upgrade to the 2BR, so that would be lost. Not a big deal. Just hate having to give up that Newport Coast exchange. We were planning to go to Disneyland and it will be closing through the end of March. Though that could easily be extended, you never know. If we could all see the future, the decision would be easy.

A couple of thoughts.

When we decided to cancel our April trip to MKO back in Jan, we paid $50 per person to redposit my United points. Your United points are likely to be worth more than $100 for both of you. Who knows, they may redeposit for free now.

The 2BR upgrade fee in II may be refunded. I don't know as I have not tried. No harm in asking.

Good luck.

I have an exchange with a cancellation replacement week scheduled for mid April, with the original date of the replacement week expiring mid May. They won't make any concessions, not even to extend the date of the week. So much for customer service in light of a global pandemic!

Well, it seems her friend is still planning to visit, at least for now. We did go ahead and retrade the NCV week for another in Orlando. Though we will keep a watch out for a week on the beach somewhere and do a retrade if something pops up.
