If anything good comes from COVID-19, it might be unbundling health insurance from employment and recognizing that health care is a right, not a privilege.

I would caution on the COBRA, "you get to keep your doctor" thing. Do not go the COBRA route for this reason. You can usually keep your doctor no matter your insurance situation. Not every doctor, but plenty will see you no matter what coverage/no coverage.

What government are you talking about? School boards aren’t governments. What school board in the state of Florida doesn’t offer dependents coverage?

Short Term Plans are routinely knocked for many legitimate reasons but if one is healthy and is looking for low cost, high deductible "Catastrophic" coverage, Short Term Plans are worth looking at. I just bought one for my Daughter-in Law who lost her coverage. Term is One Year, Deductible is $12,500, zero Co-Pay once Deductible is met, and total coverage is $2 million. Premium is a touch over $150 per month. Other than having "Catastrophic" coverage a benefit is if she goes to a Network Doctor or Hospital she will only be charged the Providers negotiated rate. The primary negative is that these plans are not renewable. For one who rarely goes to the Doctor and who has limited Prescription needs this is IMO a reasonable option...

In short My Daughter-in-law is self insured with "Catastrophic" coverage. Fortunately for her good guy George (me) is paying for the Insurance and will pay any Doctor bills she will incur...

$6,927 a year to cover your child, $10,977 to cover your family. So just covering my daughter would cost 20% of my salary. They basically just tell us to use Florida Kidcare (Medicaid) for around $3,000 a year which is basic coverage, so I have to bring her to doctors in poor areas that will accept it. It covers hospitalizations and dental, which is what I care about having on a child. I bring her to the DOH for immunization anyways since it's free regardless of income. I know I won't have to worry about suprise bills. The extra $4,000 a year isn't worth it to bring her to high income offices for primary care.

I make the same amount that unemployment has been paying out and at just my income, I don't qualify for much of a subsidy. My daughter still would cost $400/month with a similar plan that my employer provides. Don't expect affordable healthcare if you lost your job. I've never had access to it on a teacher's salary when my husband was between jobs a lot in his 20s. We just went without because food/rent/car payments were more important. The good news is they got rid of the tax penalty. I usually owed about $1,500/year when my family didn't have coverage when my husband wasn't working.

Ok. You are offered dependent coverage. You chose not to accept it.

Yes, very clearly offered whole family coverage. I would be interested in what 2BPI Family is. Looks like employee only can get local-only coverage free? I have never ever had that option!

Insurance has been expensive for a long time. Mine would be 875/mo. Up 200/mo from last year, same company, same plan.

?? Your salary has nothing to do with whether or not it was an option. It sounds like you Could Have bought it, but Didn't.

Both Medicare (you can read my post on it) and all Marketplace plans have one thing in common: enrollment periods. If you lose your original job plan ("Group Insurance"), you have around 30 days to sign up for a Marketplace plan. With Medicare, if you have a job plan and you're over 65, then if you lose that plan you can sign up for both Medicare Parts A & B, which then allows you to sign up for a Medicare Advantage or Supplement plan. Signing up for a COBRA plan negates that, taking a COBRA plan means you will lose your Marketplace or Medicare enrollment period and you'll have to wait until Annual Enrollment.
