If you ask your high school math teacher, she'll probably say something like, ‘let’s solve this problem together” . . . . . . and force you to find some paper or a chalk board and then have you carefully map out the relationship of 100 is to 5 as 430 is to X and then cross multiply and solve for X. Wait, that’ll take a lot of time and high schools smell funny anyway, especially during summer. There’s got to be a better way . . . .
Oh I know, just enter “.05 X 430” on a calculator and hit the “=” button, and you’ll find that 5% of $430 is $21.50.
Unfortunately, Hawaiian Air must be skipping summer school this year because using this SVO "5% OFF" promotion it thinks it’s $7.00. (No wonder the airlines are losing money. They can’t even do basic math).
I’m currently shopping airfares from PDX (Portland) to OGG (Maui) for November, and found a base roundtrip fare (before taxes) of $430 (not bad), but when I use SVO’s “5% Off” promo, the base fare drops $7 to $423.00 (even better).
Don’t get me wrong, a $7 discount is nothing to sneeze at, until you click around Hawaiian Air’s web site a little and find that if you enroll in HA’s mileage program, they’ll instantly drop $10 off any roundtrip HA flights between the mainland and Hawaii. The only catch is that you can’t combine discounts.
So, SVO’s Hawaiian Air 5% discount promoted on mystarcentral.com actually costs MORE than if you just booked the flights while directly logged into HA’s website under your HA mileage number.
Maybe SVO and HA should start calling this discount the “5% OFF FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE BAD AT MATH” Discount.
Oh Yeah, Hawaiian Air currently has some pretty good (well in today’s economy anyway) fall airfares from the West Coast to Hawaii. Check ‘em out. Just don’t be fooled by SVO’s 5% promo discount.
