What benefits do I lose if I buy a Marriott timeshare on the resale market?

If I buy a Floating Week with deed fixed week that is Platinum with Marriott, do I lose any benefits? Does Marriott hate on its resale buyers like some of the others (#westg@te)?

Am I able to exchange internally with Marriott?
Am I able to move points to Marriott Bonvoy?
Do I have to buy an annual II membership or is in included?
What are the membership fees.

I was looking for a FAQ type thread on them, but I couldn't find it.

Thanks.

No Marriott does not hate its resale buyers.

You will either use or rent out your week at home resort or use Interval to exchange it into another week.

No points whatsoever will be used unless you pay Marriott some serious money.

What you lose is not worth the difference in price to gain IMO.

You can't trade internally.
You can't move points to Bonvoy (most will tell you, it's not worth it).
You have to buy II membership.
No Marriott membership fee, only cost of II.

You still get access to Marriott's preference period and have priority for Marriott exchanges in II.

I own a 3rd party resale unit and have no regrets.

I'm feel like I'm treated like any other Marriott owner when I exchange into other Marriotts. Your exchange fee to Marriott and Vistana is discounted $55.

So if I buy resales. I have rights only at that property, II or to rent. I can't exchange any other locations within Marriott except through II.

I currently have RCI via HICV and its pretty slim pickin's. A Marriott trade in II will give more options to better resorts?

I bought direct from Marriott and the only internal exchange that I have access to is using the Destination Points program.

The Marriott preference in II is a huge perk that you would have access to. Because you are a Marriott owner, you get a 30 day window for other Marriott properties deposited in II.

The only true internal exchange system (week for week) that I am aware of in Marriott is the Florida club and I do not have access to it.

Buy resale unless you really want to be in the Destination Club.

Correct. You can book a week at that resort and stay or rent. You can trade via II to any other (Marriott and non-Marriott) property that is available. Availability is there. You may be limited, in terms of weeks, but you'll have access to the other Marriott properties. Just in the last 2 years I've traded into Ko Olina (x2) and Waiohai. I've seen availability at most, if not all, Marriott properties. I haven't looked for each, but some of the popular locations show availability. Locations like Hawaii, Newport Coast, Aruba, St Kitts, St Thomas, Spain, France, Hilton Head, Florida, Utah, Colorado, Tahoe, etc. Those are just some of the locations I specifically looked for, and found, availability.

Yes, and with the new preference for Vistana (Westin/Sheraton), you'll have options for/access to Marriotts, Westins, and Sheratons. Marriotts are great traders (especially to get into other Marriotts), even more so now since you get access to Vistana properties before any other II members except for Vistana owners.

I own at Marriott Palm Desert. These are weeks that I bought on the secondary market.

Right now, I'm at Hyatt Pinon Pointe (Sedona, Az). Nice place. 2 BR. Next week I'll be at Marriott Canyon Villas. 2 BR. I used an efficiency to exchange into the Hyatt. My White season Palm Desert was inexpensive to buy but if it was in points, I'd only get around 2000. That would buy me 4 nights at Marriott Newport Coast. But I used an efficiency to exchange into Newport for 7 nights (including Fri-Sat-Sun). So, I am getting decent trades through ii.

There are benefits to having destination points. But there are financial advantages to owning cheap secondary weeks. I paid around $5K for three weeks at the Marriott. I split the res's and get six weeks of vacation.

Redundant but the way I look at it, you don't lose anything. Though you may gain some options, perks if your weeks were enrolled. Free II membership, free internal II exchange fee, free plus to internal properties, free lockoff fee, free cancelations, access to Destination club points, access to cash type points usage (cruises, etc) and the like.

I just initiated a purchase via ebay for a Platinum floating, fixed week 22 at Marriott's Harbour Lake. Its an EOY Odd so hopefully they won't execute ROFR. I think we will use this for an EOY family trip to Orlando but I will definitely join II.

I'm not aware of HL having fixed weeks. They do have week 52 as a Platinum Plus which is sort of the same as a fixed week. It sounds like you own a Platinum EOY floating week that's based on week 22. You may be aware but from your wording I want to be sure you don't think you have dibs on week 22. For an EOY you plan to use most of the time I likely would not join II unless you plan to add other weeks in the near future or you'll exchange or will use the getaways extensively.

Dean has it right.
When you buy a week it is either floating or fixed- not both.
But a floating week will list a week number on the deed- you have to be buying something so a week from your season is listed. You don’t have priority on that specific week.
For Marriotts you need reserve the week you want one year in advance. There is an inventory release calculator on the MVC site to tell you what day you can reserve. You can do that online or call MVC.
Harbour Lake platinum weeks are 1- 17, 22-34, and 51. The resort calendars are also on the MVC site under helpful tools.

....
Some of the Vistana resorts have "fixed/floating" weeks -- you get first dibs on the week on your deed, then if you don't reserve that week (and prepay the annual fee), the week becomes floating. But, I don't know of any of the other major systems that have fixed/floating weeks. Even within the Vistana system, it's not very common.
