inspired by @SNA27. No need to answer if too personal. I have revised my original figures after further thought and evaluation. Chores count as family time, not personal time.

Typical weekday: 8.5 hours work; 8 hours sleep; 1 hour personal time; 3 hours round-trip commute (often on tug); 3.5 hours chores, wife, kid, and dog.

Typical weekend: 8 hours sleep; 4 hours personal time (often TUG, Wyndham, or RCI websites); 12 hours chores, wife, kid, and dog.

I am somewhat sad I spend more time at work (42.5 hours) than on chores, with wife, kid, and dog (41.5 hours). I have to pay for those timeshares somehow.

Worker bee gotta work. That is what I say to my husband when we are traveling 26 weeks a year and we see people rushing around. We r retired. Children are grown men with babes of their own(grandchildren). I try to sleep 6-8 hours. Work out 1 hr day. Clean house 1 hr daily when home. Our time is pretty much our own now. We travel a lot. I do timeshare work everyday for a few hours depending on the season. Even while traveling in the car.
Husband does installations of appliances and electronics when he wants to. Also handy man work.
I planned accordingly for retirement. Our health is good and we are living a great life.
Someday this can hopefully be you. But ya gotta pay the dues. Your time will come. That's what I always tell my kids.
I worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber for 43 years. Hubby worked for a private family owned Appliance and Electronic business for 38 years. We have 3 sons 45,44,43. 4 grandchildren. If it seems like I'm bragging I AM. Worked super hard to get here lol.
Wonderful Holidays to All. Happy Travels

To the OP: I know a guy who preferred the office to his house.
He said that at home, he had a nagging wife, needy kids, and
had to take the dogs for walks. The office was a refuge for him.
He retired, but returned to work a year later... "For his sanity."

What is this 'workweek', and 'weekend' of which you speak?

On a t-shirt in Naples, FL... Retirement: An Endless Weekend

I can't answer, "What is the best time for you to come in?"
So I say: "I prefer daylight... Fewer vampires."

When I was still working, 12 hours of work each day Monday to Friday, 8 hours of work each day on Saturday and Sunday. Commute to/from work was around 1 hours 45 min each day Mon to Fri. Slept 5 to 7 hours each night Mon to Fri, 8 to 10 hours Saturday and Sunday night. Other than breakfast, all meals out except on Saturday and sometimes on Sunday when I would cook.

Retirement means no more work. LOL. Golf, gym, doctor appointments and travel on vacation are what appear on my calendar. When I am home, surf the web, email, TUG and some TV. I cook dinner 4 nights a week.

I essentially have no life- all day, day in and day out for the past 7 months is spent dealing with this selling and renting and buying house stuff and my husband's retirement things for Medicare, his pension/401k and so forth, cleaning, shoveling snow and chopping ice, and food shopping and cooking and doing errands and handling finances and MD/dentist visits.

And as we are closing on our new home on 12/30 it has ramped up even more so again this week...

I do watch a little tv in the evening and am on the internet to have some kind of social interaction. Once per week my one close friend calls me.

When does the fun start?

I took 3 weeks off work and usually go on Vacation somewhere but Dad is 84 and in the final stages of cancer.

Typical week:

Monday to Friday: 8 to 14 hours work per day. It varies depending on demand. Demands go way up when UNCITRAL convenes or things change. Lately, the USMCA has kept me busy. Always wind down for an hour. Bed by 10 pm.

Weekends: research, take the dogs to the mountains depending on work demands. Bed by 10 pm.

Next year, I am going to slow down and will work part time. I don’t need the money anymore but do need the mental enrichment. I’m thinking of working on a Doctorate for fun. I love University.

Now, I understand why folks like William Shatner, Betty White and Paul McCartney keep working until they truly can’t.

I work Mon-Thurs, as far as going into the office goes. But I’m pretty much in touch with work every day of the week unless I’m on vacation (and sometimes even then).

Two to three work days, I get up around 4:30am to get a workout in on one of the bikes (usually the race bike) for 1-2 hours. Then I commute to work an hour, work 8-10 hr or until I’m done, commute home an hour. Then it’s around 1-3 hours of relaxing at home with spouse and dogs, dinner, etc, then in bed by 9am.

Weekends, I ride or race my bike(s) around 4-8hr total time over the three days. I work the dogs- field work or Nosework- maybe an hour a day each weekend day. Hit the farmers market and/or produce market, cook for the week and weekends, get together with friends, etc.

We also travel a lot, around 5 weeks per year plus many long weekends- mostly these are mountain bike trips, some road bike trips, rarely trips that don’t involve riding. The weekend trips are mostly cycling and sailing. Winter is dachshund hunt season in SoCal, from Oct through March I have 16 full weekend days (sunrise to sunset) scheduled for field trials, hunt tests and Earthdog tests. Spring and early summer are centered around bike racing. Late summer and fall is for mountain biking.

I have no complaints.

I try to wake up each morning. Drink some coffee. Unless something needs doing I'm not really committed to anything in particular for the most part. Occasionally I have to figure out what day it is.

I like to be warm these days so Mexico and Hawaii in the winter suit me fine. I find that I pretty much do there what I do here which is what ever I want for the most part.

For a lot of people....sometimes work is easier than juggling home, especially if you are the point person at home.

That's me- the point person. It is a heavy responsibility.

I can see this for mothers who work, cook and take care of children and their schedules. I find it difficult to comprehend being a point person when there are 2 healthy retirees.

My husband and I have always split household chores and we still do. He used to take care of paying bills when we were working and finally when we retired, I took it over because bills were not being paid, even back when we were working and he ended up paying all sorts of late fees and he would deny that the bill came in to his email etc. I also manage cash flows to ensure that we always have money in the bank to pay bills. We remain busy and have no idea how we had time to do personal stuff when we were working.

Unlike most that posted here I still work. Typical day is wake up at 5:30am and I’m in the car at 6:10am. Arriving at work at 6:30am. I usually work into 4:30pm but sometimes later. It usually takes me twice as long or more to get home so typically I’m home by 5:30pm.
That’s Monday through Friday.

After work, we mostly eat at home until Friday. Then we go out for dinner. So many options here within walking distance. That’s when we talk about our days. Then we get our internet stuff done along with some tv and I’m in bed by 9:00pm.

Weekends I usually sleep until 8am on Saturday but Sunday I get up at 7am because football starts here then. Sunday is our grocery shopping day after football. Generally Saturday is our day to get out and about to hit the beach or check things out.

That’s about it. My wife is sure enjoying her retirement now. Probably 5 more years for me but I may shoot for 4. :)

I think the issue is that if one spouse has been the point person for 40+ years, it is really difficult for the other spouse to suddenly become an equal in that regard.

He/she is simply not used to it and does not have the"experience" behind them to tackle certain things. It is hard to make up for 40+ years of lost time.

This all said, that does not mean the other spouse does not "help" out. But the point person always has to be on guard even then. The point person has been there, done that already.

Since hubby and I are both home we don't really need to follow or need to notice if it's a weekday/weekend. The only reason I pay attention to what day of the week it is, we babysit our grandchildren 3-4 days a week. The rest of the time, there is always a doctor appointment, test, all types of errands, post office, bank, the never ending food shopping, etc. etc.

We meet up with friends for dinner once in a while (maybe every three months), I meet up with my friend for breakfast a few times a year, one of my kids sometimes needs us for something (house/delivery, etc.). I handle the paper work in the house, I plan our vacations and every morning if we are not babysitting, is not raining and at least 45 degrees :) - we walk about 5 - 1/2 miles.

We have busy, busy days and down days which we welcome.
