Different strokes for different folks. When I think of protest songs I immediately go to the Vietnam era. My first thought was of Edwin Starr’s version of WAR. Barry McGuires song Eve of Destruction was also right at the top.

Protest songs to me are the Vietnam era in the sixty’s.

Maybe “A Change is going to come.” By Sam Cooke

Ohio by CSNY and For What it’s Worth by Buffalo Springfield are two of my favorites.

Edited to add: Almost forgot What’s Going On by the late, great Marvin Gaye.

HVC: The Point at Poipu, 3 deeded weeks, 1 of which is in The Club.
Eric Bogle wrote "No Man's Land". It has been recorded and become a major hit many times over, both as "Green Fields of France" and "Willie McBride". British Prime Minister Tony Blair referred to him as a dead Irish poet when referring to this song as his favourite anti-war poem. Eric Bogle jokes that he's not dead and he's not Irish. He was born in Scotland and moved to Australia. He's 79 and still vertical. He's written some of the saddest and funniest songs I've heard.

I think his own performance of "No Man's Land" beats the rest.

Eve of Destruction is a VERY powerful song...and the raspy voice emphasizes that.

Although most people aren't familiar with this, 'Death to Mother Nature' from Kansas debut album in 1974 was an early 'protest' about environmental impact.

Definitely Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday. Glad they didn't miss that one. IMHO - Every other protest song I've heard, including all of the Vietnam War era, is a distant second.

Woody Guthrie's "This land is your land" is sung now as a patriotic American anthem but was written as a protest song and remains my favorite. It was written as a response to Irving Berlin's God Bless America which Guthrie felt did not describe the America he was seeing as he travelled the country. My other favorite is Tom Paxton's "Lyndon Johnson told the nation."

Two songs by Pete Seeger worthy of mention:
"Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" and
"Waist Deep in Big Muddy"

This seems right for my kind of protest song. I kind of like the verse, " Growin' up leads to growin' old and then to dying , ooo and dyin' to me don't sound like all that much fun"

Johnny Cash rendition of "I Won't Back Down" is a great protest song about standing up no matter the cost.

I have only heard the Tom Petty version. In this version it just seems like another Tom Petty rock tune on the Full Moon Fever record which is one of my favorites.
