Thank you - I really didn’t realize that typhus & typhoid were different .( both bacterial)
I knew the story of Typhoid Mary.

typhus - spread by lice / often in crowded conditions . untreated = 10- 60% risk of death

antibiotic treatment - doxycycline

Anne Frank and her sister Margot died of typhus .

Major epidemics in post WW II Europe chaos were prevented by widespread use of recently discovered
DDT to kill the lice on millions of refugees and displaced persons .

1922 era - 3 million died of typhus during the Russian civil was between the white and red armies .
many were civilians .


The term jail (gaol) fever was used in historic England . Often more prisoners died from it than were executed
in the course of a year .

1812 - During Napoleons retreat from Moscow , more French h soldiers died from typhus than were kill by Russians.
