A couple of the many cathedrals and churches in La Antigua, Guatemala. The first is La Iglesia de Merced, colloquially known as the "wedding cake" church because of its architectural style. The second is from La Iglesia de San Francisco, which has the tomb of Hermano Pedro, the first Central American saint, known as the St. Francis of Assissi of the Americas. This portion of the church originally had a dome, but the dome collapsed in an earthquake and was never rebuilt. The third picture of a mural in the La Iglesia de San Frnacisco. Scroll down to the picture for some explanation.

The mural below is also in La Iglesia de San Francisco. From where I took the photo above, this mural is to my left, and the entrance to the crypt for Hermano Pedro is to the right.

The words above the mural say that Mother Earth is a gift of God for everyone to take care of and to share as brothers. Hermano Pedro is on the right. The view is of the lush valleys and streams of Guatemala, with the volcanoes next to Antigua towering over the valley. The bird is the quetzal, the national symbol of Guatemala. I've forgotten the who the other two figures in the mural are.

Salvation Mountain is an eclectic type of church I guess. It is on a hill near a large homeless camp called the "slab" near the Salton Sea.

We were in Barcelona and could only see the outside of this church because it was being restored. I saw they've completed the restoration.

Not sure they would call it restoration. La Sagrada Familia has been under construction since 1882. It is my understanding that construction is still ongoing and certain decorative finishes won't be complete until 2030.

This was perhaps our favorite in Rome, S Maria Della Vittoria. It was only steps away from our hotel and we didn't find it until the last day of the trip.

Why did you start a new thread since there is an identical thread started by @Fredflintstone ?

This 16th century church, called the Church of Intercession, with it's nine onion domes, is part of an open air museum located on Kizhi Island on Onega Lake in the Republic of Karelia, Russia. A more spectacular church with 21 onion domes sits nearby but was being renovated and was surrounded with scaffolding so wasn't worth photographing.

St. Philomena Church in Kalaupapa on Molokai. Kalaupapa was a leprosy quarantine colony. St. Philomena Church was built under the direction of Father Damien, a Belgian priest who came to Kalaupapa to minister there, and was responsible for huge improvements of the people who had been dumped and abandoned there. Scroll down for more information.

The main sanctuary of the church. It was quite an effort to get some of the building materials imported to Kalaupapa. In addition to the basic logistic difficulties, many ships did not want to come to Kalauapapa out of fear of contracting leprosy.

This is seating to the left of the pulpit area in the above photo. This area was reserved for parishioners who had been infected in the nose and throat, leading to coughing and nasal discharge. These people would have a tube to spit or sneeze into, with the tube extending through the hole in the floor.
