We'll be on Kauai later this month for Thanksgiving week. Any chance of seeing whales while we're there? Are they found off any one part of the island more than another?

Aloha Dave,
From KBV G5, just keep sweeping the horizon looking for the mist from their exhalations. Thanksgiving might be early. You might see spinners. Otherwise, just look for the turtles feeding by the rocky point where the canal drains below your nose at sunrise.

We just returned from Maui - we didn't see any ourselves but heard from a number of sources that the whales were early this year and a number had already been seen.

I'd heard the same, but you never know whether it's really true, or just a ploy by people selling whale-watching cruises. Hope to see some on Kauai. I live in the Pacific Nowthwest, and see Orca whales frequently. It'd be great to see whales in Hawaii.

The most whales we have ever seen were in the first two weeks of December on a Captain Andy's whale watch out of Kauai 3 years ago. Even more than we have ever seen on Maui.

I still remember the calf trying to get closer to the ship than mama wanted. The cow got between the ship and the calf and the calf absolutely pitched a fit for 15 minutes. Slapped its tail a number of times and then headed right for the motionless ship until mama changed its mind.

Not much different from some human babies in the toy or candy department.
Except mama whale didn't give in. :D

Took the Capt. Andys boat trip Friday 10/6. The reader board there noted a whale spotting on 11/3. We saw lots of Blue and Spinner Dolphins, turtles, and a Monk seal...nice trip, but no whales!
