My wife is a fervent whale watcher. We leave in a while for Kauai and are wondering what the whale watching season is like this year. Mahalo.

We saw early whales in November on Maui. They expect the highest number in years this year.

Due to the economy, there are a lot more "whales get in free" offers in the islands than ever before. Thus, the increase in numbers... ;)

I have seen mild whale activity off my lanai this week.

When I first saw what I thought might be a whale earlier in my stay, I wasn't so sure. But, since that first time, I have seen several whale blows or whatever they are called and a couple clear whales slightly breaching the ocean surface. Nothing fancy yet, like I saw last year on the other side of the island.

whale web sit - Hawaii

I have fun checking out www.jupiterfoundation.org which is a whale site orginating from Puako on the Big Island.
Can't seem to get the live web cam tonight but whale sounds are amazing. Will be on island with my grandgirls on the 9th of feb. Can't wait to see their reaction to seeing whales swimming off shore!

We are in Kaua'i. We were informed there was whale activity at the Kilauea Lighthouse at the North Shore, however, we saw no whales there today. On the way back to Kapaa, we enjoyed watching 3 frisky whales at the lookout at Kealia, near Kealia Beach. Glad we remembered our binoculars!

Aloha from KBV,
We are in a third floor ocean front unit. Number of whale spouts sighted from our lanai today must be triple digit. Three whales breached within seconds of each other. Easy to see many backs and tails. Some whales appeared to be swimming between two and three hundred yards from shore.

The last time we were in Maui, years ago, we were there the first week of March, which the locals said was "whale soup." :D

Re: Whale soup

Last year we were at WKORV at the end of April. We saw more whales every day from the Lanai than we had ever seen previously on visits in January and February. Also, we saw almost everyday around 10:30 or 11:00 am a pod or pods of spinner dolphins headed north towards Kapalua. It was so much fun to see them.:)

Our first genuine cloudy / windy day in a very long time, so I took the time to post a photo.

The best thing about Pacific Whale Museum tours is their hydrophones that let you listen in to the whale talk.

I am unaware of any Kauai whale tours that use hydrophones. For sure Captain Andy's does not have hydrophones operational.

Since my last post, we have seen whales from our lanai at Pono Kai, at Poipu Beach, Spouting Horn and at the lighthouse at Ninini point. It's so cool! :whoopie:

Glad to hear that. We're staying at LBR at Lawai Beach. Look forward to seeing the activity.

whales south shore

Whales have been quite awesome this past week....right in close and jumping. Just as I type I looked out and guess what another jumper in close to the Lawai.

Perfect sunsets too. Weather has been great....trades back into next week.
