Whale Shark Tour in La Paz

We have done this twice. It is great.

Thanks for sharing your pics Eric. Very cool.

Awesome. I totally want to do that. Wife will watch from the boat. I’ve got 3 Cabo trips this year. Is there a specific time of year when it is best to do this?

November through April. We used Mexplore.

How visible is it if you want to stay on the boat?

Visibility from just the boat was not the best, though you could see them. (See, e.g., the picture taken at 11:11.) It might have been a decent trip anyway with what you can see from the boat, but having gotten in the water, my perspective is a bit different as there is so much more to see underwater.

The ones in the Bay of La Paz are all juveniles (up to about 30 years old). The really big ones live in deeper waters; these ones feed in the bay during the winter months when the conditions are right for good availability of plankton in shallow water; it was only about 15-20' deep where we were. They live to be 100-130 years old.

Hi @Eric B We are headed to La Paz for six days tomorrow. Glamping on Espiritu Santo and then have two full days in La Paz. Hoping to.go to Balandara one day and whale shark tour the other.

Did you line up the excursion ahead of time? Did they loan you a shorty? Any other tips? We will be in hotel near main marina.

What great photos! Thanks for sharing!

We went with Mexplore; chose them because they have marine biologists as the guides. Karla was our guide and did a great job.

I had made the reservations a couple of weeks in advance but some of the others on the tour had booked the night before. They loan a shorty and snorkel gear.

We grabbed lunch at Los Alteños a couple of blocks from the pier - really good birria and the price was decent. They're only open 8:00 am to 2:00 pm.

We only did an overnight trip up there, staying at the Courtyard by Marriott. Ate a late lunch at El Molinito the day before the whale shark trip; it's partway between La Paz and the Courtyard and was quite good, too.

The second time we went we met a guy in a small plaza along the water front. The trip was as good as the one run by the major tour company and was a lot less expensive. Of course you have to have a car or be staying in La Paz for several days.
