The Foodland card is called a Makai card - like Safeway, only need a phone number associated with the card.

Yes, I only type my phone in the Foodland and Safeway terminals and get my discounts. I don't need the physical card, though you do have to initially open an account.

Just about all CA residents have a Safeway card......we've (among our friends) discussed signing up for a card with some random phone number and then all of us using that phone number whenever we shop for a year. It would be awesome to have a common TUG Safeway and Foodland phone number that EVERYONE uses..........:hysterical:

I'd love to see how the gigadata computer deals with that :crash:

With my car rental last Aug in Kauai (Alamo) - there was a FoodLand Makai card on the auto's key chain, but we have our own.
For Safeway - I use an old phone number that has another persons name associated with it. Since I do not care about the 'rewards' - I just use that number.

What is important is that almost everything is discounted with the reward cards at Safeway and Foodland - so pretty important to have one to save significant money.

We used a Makai card at Foodland in Princeville last January that we had activated several years ago. My husband used it and left a pineapple at the checkout stand. They actually CALLED us and told us he had left it there and they were holding it for him ! Now that's service !

I remember those discounts on the Safeway card when we were on Maui were terrific. Grapes that were something outrageous like $5.99/lb turned out to be $1.99/lb with the discount. There was a young couple in front of me at the checkout and the cashier made them fill out the application for the discount card right there in line and they saved over $20.00 on the snorkel equipment and sunscreen in their cart. Super nice employees! I guess it is the aloha spirit in action. ;)

Just use "Jenny's" number: 867-5309. A friend told me in his company's rewards program, they discovered that was the number people commonly registered and used when customers didn't want to disclose their own phone numbers.
