Westin Ka'anapali Special Assessment?

Hi everyone, we own 4 weeks between the Westin Kaanapali and Westin Kaanapali North, and went to an owner update at a Sheraton resort in Florida yesterday. We haven't been to Maui since June 2023.

The sales person told us that there is going to be a $2,700 special assessment for EACH week owned due to the Lahaina fire. We had not heard that, and I've not found anything online about it. Has heard of this or seen it anywhere? Thank you!

Lies. The Lahaina fire didn't damage Westin. That's desperation. The salespeople know that what you own is worth way more than anything they have to sell.

Welcome to TUG.

And let me guess if you just bought something new or traded in your existing ownerships you would not have to pay the special assessments?

And let me guess: they wanted you to "upgrade" by exchanging your four valuable Maui deeds, adding some cash, and receiving some number of Westin Flex points worth far less than what you currently own.

You all are veterans to this process. Man, sometimes I wonder why we even agree to sit through these "updates"! :) Not sure it's worth a few hundred bucks to spend a 75 minutes sifting through the lies.

I feel like we all should start making formal complaints to the state licensing authorities (Department of Real Estate or similar) every time we get lied to. These folks are licensed real estate agents and should be held accountable for their lies. So tired of them trying to cheat people.

It's not for us, although some love to play the game.

I think there should be laws against inviting anyone over 70 (maybe even younger) to a timeshare presentation. My real father, to whom I just became reconnected in the last four months, and his wife bought an RCI Points deed at Grandview in Vegas fairly recently. He is turning 90 in March, she turns 88 in March.

That is absolutely predatory.

No timeshare purchase “pays off” for a number of years (and some purchases never end up making financial sense.) I agree that it’s predatory to push timeshare on people over a certain age, maybe 70. But of course, they are probably sometimes easier ”marks” on which to prey.

My timeshare purchase of around $45K in 2005 is now worth $10K if I'm lucky despite it being sold to me as a "real estate investment". In fact I think I'll give them my Owners Update when I'm at WKORVN next week and let them know how my investment is doing :giggle:
