We have owned here for about 15yrs we have had some lovely exchanges all over the world through II but like a lot of people our holidaying has changed.
I have looked into giving it back to Westgate but I can't seem to find out how much it will cost.
We own a 1 bed for 1 week in sept (Micky Mouses birthday week apparently)
Our II membership expires 2016. How do we go about renting privately (would we even be able to?) If we kept the timeshare?

Just to let you know, your post has been seen. I don't own Westgate, or rent, but can give you a hint or two. Westgate isn't likely to take back your week. They would rather have the maintenance fees- forever. You can certainly post an ad in the 'Bargain Deals' section of the Buying, Selling, Renting forum. Free. Just follow the basic format of ads you see there, make it attractive, refresh it periodically to keep it high on the list. Someone will love to have your week. Unfortunately, Westgate strips many of the benefits you have from the week for the next owner, but perhaps someone has a consecutive week they'd like to add to.

Other TUGgers rent weeks out. They have a rental agreement that potential renters sign. Payment can be my card, check, Pay-Pal. Ads can be posted in the same (BSR) section I mentioned above, or in the TUG Marketplace (red stripe above). Members get free ads.

You may try reposting your request in the other forum, as it's unlikely to be seen here by your target audience.

Best wishes!

Jim

I have looked into giving it back to Westgate but I can't seem to find out how much it will cost.

Have you contacted the resort about it? Some resorts that do take TSs back might require that you pay closing costs plus next year's maintenance fees. That seems to be the standard recently.

Now that you've posted your plight in a public forum like this, watch out for all the scammers out there who claim they will get you out of your TS for thousands of dollars. In the last couple months, I've had two phone calls from companies like this. It's not those resale scammers but, rather, ones who say that they work with lawyers to legally cancel your timeshare. One quoted me a price of $2700! The funny thing is we sold it years ago.

I seem to recall TUG posts in the not too distant past clearly indicating that Westgate was taking deeds back and, even more specifically, charging $1,500 to do so.

Since "deedback" programs come and go at developer whim, only direct contact with Westgate can conclusively determine whether "deedback" is even an option for the OP's week. Surely worth a phone call to find out, rather than jump into the time consuming hassle of becoming a "involuntary landlord" as an alternative, at least IMnsHO.
I'd certainly be looking for a permanent exit ramp here, if not already closed. How else can a Westgate ownership ever be easily and permanently disposed of?
