I have a RC I have to use by July and neither of my trade requests have come through yet (placed last July 08), so I'm going to plan B.

We're from Phoenix and looking to escape the heat a bit, but wanting it to be warm enough for the pool or beach (80s?). I know I'm bound to run into some June gloom. We also have a 4 year old. We'll probably want to visit Seaworld, Legoland, San Diego, and the beach when we're there.

I can get a 2 bedroom in mid-May at Marriott Newport Coast (I can try adding a request for later?). Seems the beach would be warmer here? But we'd be farther from San diego.

If we stayed at the Welk, we'd want to be near the Boulder water area. I saw a map, but couldn't clearly tell where that is located? Is it between Villa on the Green and Broadway Hill in the older units?

I can get a 2 bedroom in the older units, but do I run the risk of being far away from that pool area? Also, isn't Escondido significantly hotter? When? I don't want to deal with 90s and not be able to walk around outside.

I can get a 1 bedroom in Villas on the Green any time, but I'd have to put in a request for a 2 bedroom. Would it be a large disappointment to be in a 1 bedroom at Villas? Is it really that cramped? Anyone have good photos or floor plans?

I'm debating taking something now or adding more resorts to my request and talking my chances of not getting something in socal. :wall:

Are you traveling with children? The older Villa's are closer to Bolder Creek area if I remember correctly. The older Villa's are larger than the Villa's on The Green. The resort is rather large and a small bit of a walk to practically any pool but there are several pools to choose from. My children also enjoy the rec rooms and we went to an on site Broadway play while we were there as well. Personally I did not find the heat unbearable. I think the heat here is different than what you experience and it does cool down at night.

I can't comment on the resorts, but mid May is a nice time of year here.

It is possible to get June Gloom in May (May Gray), but the chance of that at Welk (inland) is far less likely compared to Newport (coastal).

Neither place should be 90+ degree's in May, though it's not impossible, just not normal.

Theresa, when were you there? Do you remember the building you were in?

So if we went to the Welk the last week of May, do you think it'd be warm enough for some beach and pool? Or too cold for us with thin blood? LOL

Welk is inland about 30 miles and will be warmer and sunnier. You can walk or drive around the resort pretty easily. I personally love the older villas, which are large and well built and extremely relaxing. If you get a lower unit, you would have access to a patio and probably grass. I've never been to Newport Coast. I would think the weather might be good, but the ocean temps will still be very cool (unless global warming is changing that).

There are differences, but it depends what you want.

I live right between the two properties and visited both. This week I actually had a tour of the Welk property. It is in Escondido and has pretty much everything at the resort, but you have access to San Diego and Orange County or LA if you would like. I saw the rooms and depending where you are placed the rooms can be a little smaller. I was in a two bedroom which they said is considered two one bedrooms. However, one of the one bedrooms was considerably smaller than the other. It was more of a lockoff to me. I would not like that. That side felt more closed in.

There are the new units called The Villas that are there too. These are nice. Fireplaces in the bedrooms and such. Also, they are close to the pool with the long waterslide. It is a big property with over 600 acres and the different buildings have some distance between them. Nevertheless, I think the property is nice.

Newport Coast Villas is in Newport Beach but it is not directly on the beach. You can take the shuttle that is offered or walk. The weather may or may not be hot enough to swim in during May. It just depends. There are also lots of hills at Newport Coast. Walkiing to the swimming pool could be a hike depending on where your unit is. It is a beautiful resort, but there is no restaurant on the property that I remember but a lot of places close by. I would say the the Welk property is a little more conducive to a 4 year old than Newport Beach.

I would probably think about in which direction I want to visit more of before I made a decision. If I was going to tour Orange County with Disney, Knotts, and LA with Universal, Hollywood and NBC I would stay at Newport because there is less driving. If I am going to hit San Diego with Coronado, San Diego Zoo, Wild Animal Park and Seaworld, I would park my self at the Welk resort.

The environments seem close but the Newport Coast is a little more upscale.

We were there a couple of years ago. As far as the weather goes it will probably be in the 70's. Warm enough for a 4 year old to swim. Like Liz I prefer the older units because of the size. If LegoLand is important to you, you might also want to check out the Grand Pacific Palisades (5362).

Don't forget about Wild Animal Park, just 15-20 minutes from Welk in Escondido. We liked it a lot. Also, there is a great hands on science museum in Balboa Park, Ruben Fleet Space Museum. I think with a small child, I'd aim for Welk and San Diego and do a trip to Carlsbad for Legoland. It's not hard to get to Carlsbad from Welk at all, about 35-45 minutes.

Thanks all! I'm trading through II, so Palisades isn't an option.

I think I'll go for Welk, but now I'm trying to figure out the unit and the timeframe. I would like to go over 4th of July or Memorial Day since my DH can use less vacation days. Crowds will be much less the week after MD as opposed to the weeks surrounding the 4th (school will be out by then). But would July be too hot to be enjoyable? Someone told me it gets REALLY hot there!

And I'm still confused about the units. I want to be close to the pool with the slide because I'm sure we'll use it a lot. But where is it located on the property? My choices are currently a 2 bedroom in the older stuff or 1 bedroom in Villas on the Green (won't do mountain villas, too far). OR, I can put in a request and run the risk of waiting again (I'd just like to be done with this!). I just hear Villas are significantly small in a 1 bedroom -- and we'll be using the sofabad for sure.

Maybe I should just call the resort! LOL
