We are Wyndham owners and usually stay at their properties but had extra points in RCI and are going to the Welk resort at Escondido 6/17 to 6/24. I have a brother in San Diego, and also lived in San Diego for a couple of years a long time ago, but is there anything specific to the Welk resort or Escondido area that would be helpful to us? There will just be my husband (80) and myself (71) on this trip. We have no health issues and plan on doing lots of walking. He loves to golf - we're going to Welk following the US Open and he marshals at several tournaments - so there will be at least one day of golf for him. I also gave some points to my daughter, and she is going to the same resort in August with her husband and 3 kids, ages 3, 9, and 10. They are not golfers but are very active. It looks like the zoo Safari Park is nearby. Any tips about that, or nearby stores/shops/restaurants? Thanks in advance!

When we were there a few years ago we went to the zoo Safari Park. We really enjoyed it. Also, Escondido is very good wine country. We stopped at a couple of the wineries in the area. Not more than 30 minutes from the resort. The resort itself has a small theater that has a live show every week. If you're looking for unique dining try the Hash House A Go Go in the city (about 35-40 minutes from the resort). They were on the Travel Channel a few years ago. Be forewarned the portions are big. I had the Chicken & Waffles. Soooo much better than it ought to be.

Have to jump in here -- I happen to be staying in Gaslamp area of San Diego -- surrounded by good food. And I just told my sis about " Hash House a go go" . But don't want to wait in line on a Saturday.

We own in Ramona, which isn't far from Welk. We always liked to go up to Julian for part of a day. I haven't been there in years so I really don't know what all is still there, but they were known for their apples, and apple products, especially the pies.

I just checked and for us to go from Ramona it was about 30 minutes, from Welk it would be about an hour.

The resort has a lot of onsite activities, but there is not much to do around it. Most everything is a 20 minute drive, assuming no traffic. I enjoy spending time along the coast. Carlsbad and Encinitas are nice, Del Mar has horse track, La Jolla is nice to walk around. Torry Pines State Reserve is also a great walk. Your husband may want to play the Torrey Pines golf course. The city of Escondido hosts "Cruisin' Grand" every Friday.

The Rancho Bernardo Inn has an excellent Brunch. It's at the Veranda Fireside Lounge & Restaurant

For your grandkids, Legoland (Carlsbad) and the beach aren't too far away. I definitely second D.Z. Akins. It isn't close to the resort, but worth the stop if you are driving into San Diego.
