We’ve had a lot less trash since shelter-in-place

We have had very little trash since staying at home. I was surprised that we only had 2 bags of trash 1 of which was from decluttering. Usually our bin is pretty full. I figured out it’s because My husband has done a lot of baking / cooking from scratch—bread, sausage kolaches, waffles. And I haven’t cooked anything that comes out of a package. We’re even making pizza from scratch.

But we do have a lot of delivery boxes from amazon, ups, and fedex.

Recycling vs trash huh?

We’ve been the opposite, generating much more trash than we ever did before! Between using paper towels for hand drying and both my wife and I being home and eating every meal home we are filling up at least 1 tall kitchen garbage bag a day!

Yikes. I consider our garbage men heros dealing with the increased loads generated by us and our neighbors!

Trash collection is up in the 757 area in all the cities according to a Waste Management report last night on television. I guess with all the schools being closed and the stay in home order. People are cooking more and ordering more take out food.IMO.

“Republic Services, one of the largest waste management companies in the US, said it expects the volume of residential garbage to increase by as much as 30%.”

Used to love me some sausage kolaches :) Yum!! Yes, I noticed less trash, too. I assume there will less advertising as in junk mail which I recycle.
Overall, we've got to be spending less.

We have more trash. And now since our recycling center is closed it's increased again.

We have more trash because it's spring, and our huge yard, most is not grass, is getting weeded and that creates trash, but it's always like this in April. This is the time to clean up the yard and put down some bark mulch to keep weeds down. Every year.

Inside, we always have one large trash bag per week. That's it. Outside, we fill our two barrels in the spring-summer.

Just took two trash cans of stuff to the dump because the hauler isn’t taking any extras during the current shutdown. Mostly stuff I should have thrown long ago but being stuck here gives me extra time to clean out the house and garage. Probably have more to haul away soon.

Cheers

Count us on the less trash side of the equation during this time. We are cooking less frequently but when we do cook, trying to make large meals so we can have leftovers for lunches and dinners the next few days.

Our utility bills have decreased ever so slightly too but that is likely more a result of a run of wet and mild weather over the past month.

We have less trash. In fact two weeks ago we didn't even bother to wheel the cans to the curb. Our green can however is loaded from yard projects this week.

Definitely more trash, as 1) we have our daughter home from college with us and 2) we are preparing and eating many more meals at home vs. work / eating out.

Also, what is the deal with using so many more paper towels? After we wash our hands, we use a hand towel. I see using paper towels just for drying your hands as a complete waste of money, energy and trees.

We have been getting take out about once a week, and it's sad to see how much packaging waste ends up in our garbage can. Our community has no restrictions on types of containers that can be used, so much is not recyclable and it seems each component of a meal like meat, potatoes, salad, bread, etc gets packaged in a separate container. I'm sure the restaurants are trying to make the meals as appetizing as they can to keep people coming back. But compared to when we would go out to a dinner at the same restaurant, it definitely adds to our garbage.
