Just got back from a much needed and relaxing sunbreak in Cabo, which was great except for our experience with a timeshare presentation at Raintree (next to Westin). We had gone to a presentation at Pueblo Bonito at Sunset, which was fine--they accepted "no, not now" and that was it.

At Raintree, however, after saying "no, not now" once, they set another salesman on us, and he really tried for a hard sell. I told him that I was worried as there was flooding in our area, and he said I could use their computer to check my e-mail when we were finished, but instead YET ANOTHER salesman sat down and once again tried to offer us "a deal we couldn't refuse." After many, many "nos", they finally we willing to let us go, and I mentioned that I had been told I could check my e-mail on their computer, and he informed me that I couldn't.

They did give us the gifts they promised, but I've been to many timeshare presentations (obviously) and have NEVER felt as drained and annoyed afterward as we did at the one from Raintree.

Just wanted to pass the word on here as a warning to those people planning to go to Cabo.

Times are desperate

With the economy the way it is, developer timeshare sales are way down which is hurting a lot of people who rely on them for their livelyhood. I know how many people feel about timeshare sales people, me too, but it is the "grease that turns the proverbial wheel". As Nancy Regan so eloquently once said, Just Say No,, and then keep saying it until it hurts (them).

Unless they took you out on a boat or you are relying on them to drive you back, physically GET UP and WALK OUT.

I think he meant the Raintree one. It is first on the list at TS4M. She also had 5 different people.

Artlover. We had a very similar experience there in Jan. as I explained in a response on that same TS4M thread.

Our guy was an American ex-pat and started out "sugary sweet." Then he just got nasty. Shall I mention his physical characteristics to see if yours was the same guy??? Uh......... maybe not. Well, I'm sure you would recognize him as he stands out a bit.

The thing I forgot to mention in that post was the kicker...After we said "no thank you", he told us that since we are 46 and 48 years old, we would qualify for the Senior Discount/Retirement plan.

Unless they took you out on a boat or you are relying on them to drive you back, physically GET UP and WALK OUT.

In our experience, they refused to ratify the promised incentives (which amounted to a good amount) until they were done. By that time we had invested enough time that we were not going to leave without them.

mindyy35,
"senion incentives" at 46 and 48 :D ! That's a new one, huh?

We too had invested too much time to "just walk away" (plus we needed them for the shuttle back to our hotel), but it wasn't pleasant--though the massages almost made up for it.

I don't blame people for trying to make a living, and yes, this economy has hurt many of us, but I just wanted to post so that others here know that Raintree is a real tough presentation.

Barbeque, We passed on the Mayan after this...enough was enough...just how "entertaining" was the Mayan?

The Grupo Mayan runs the most aggressive, deceitful, fraudulent, and shameless time share sale operation imaginable. Their sales people are trained to mislead you, lie to you, intimidate you, coerce you, trick you into buying time shares from them in any imaginable way - and some which you can't even imagine! They will not let you go away, they will try to wear you out, until you give up and sign. (It is not really the first person who sits down with you, he/she does not know all the tricks, but the second, third, etc. who will join him/her if you balk or try to walk out at any time.) They will promise you the stars - almost all of which will be blatant lies. Note that one of the items they ask you to initial on the sign-off sheet is that: "I have not received or relied on any promise , offer or inducement of any kind, oral or written not set forth in my contract." And the Contract, when you eventually get it, will only list that you bought e.g. one registered and one vacation fair week at the level they were able to talk you into. And they are very careful to protect themselves legally. Note that they will not let anyone else sit with you at the presentation, they will not let you keep any piece of paper on which they wrote anything, you will find that anything you wrote down will miraculously disappear, etc.
If you go to any presentation, you will know it is a scam, when you say you want to think it over or that you are not interested, the "presenter" will call another sales person who will come up with another offer and other incentives. IF THAT HAPPENS, TRY TO GET UP AND LEAVE IMMEDIATELY BECAUSE IT IS A SCAM! Because if you still balk, a third person will come with other offers, then a fourth one, and they will begin to intimidate you, ridicule you, etc. RUN AWAY FROM THERE AS SOON AS YOU CAN! This is the procedure at any Grupo Mayan presentation, so my advice is: NEVER, EVER, GO TO A GRUPO MAYAN PRESENTATION!!

Not For Me

We will be at MOC this Saturday (YEAH!!!).

There is no way I'm going to spend 1/2 day of my vacation time in Maui allowing Marriott's salespeople to try and hammer me into submission. I am not buying and I am not going to subject myself to their abuse for a few measley points (that they will depreciate when I want to turn them in).

Everytime I read one of these threads on the horrors of sales presentations, I reconfirm that promise I made to myself: "never again."

Raintree

We just came back from a stay at the Hacienda del Mar in Cabo. We went to the Raintree presentation. Actually, they were very respectful and considerate. They gave us not only the items they promised, but when I wanted a massage instead of the dinner cruise, they gladly made those arrangements. Plus, they paid for our taxi cabs back and forth TWICE.

I have been to many presentations and I found this sell to be neither harder nor softer than many.

Plus, as someone else said, you can always "Just say no," and walk away. They aren't holding you hostage (I hope).

The MOC is not nearly as bad. We attended a presentation last June - it probably didn't take more than 30 minutes, maybe 40, and we received 4 $25 gift certificates valid at several restaurants around the area. Very low pressure. When we said no, that was the end of it, we were given our certificates, we were thanked for attending the presentation, and then we left.

Timeshares

On the lighter side I went to one at Kona Coast II a month ago, was in the room about 15 minutes and walked out with $200 I guess the lady didn't want to dance with me. :hysterical:

Glad some people didn't have negative experiences at the Raintree--maybe just depends on whatever, who knows?

Aghh.....this brings back horrible memories of a Wyndham presentation we attended; five hours later we were so beaten down we signed. Many of the same tactics were used. Thankfully, I found this site and we rescinded just in time.:cheer:
