I am proud to say my grandfather (USN retired) was at pearl harbor the day it was attacked, and it was something he never spoke about in detail to either my father or me during his lifetime.

Just something to reflect on during this day of mourning for so many families.

and a picture of my father, the founder of TUG (and a US navy pilot) at this very memorial...im sure this was a sad visit for him.

Thanks for sharing. We were at the Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor last Tuesday - staying at Marriott Ko Olina these 2 weeks. I cannot describe the sadness we all felt. The world has to thank the USA for ending the war in the Pacific. But it is pure insanity and evil how US got pulled into the war. I don't want to get political here. But my parents who lived through World War II told stories of the atrocities they saw with the occupation of their country - a country which I grew up in. USA has been the savior to so many people in the world. I thank all Americans who fought in the World War II and all who sacrificed their lives. My father-in-law who passed away recently fought in the World War II in Japan as well as in Korea. He visited Pearl Harbor many times but it was always difficult for him.

The war was tough and so were all the men who fought.. You winder how they can, but they did and do.

Ron's dad was in the African conflict areas and then went from there immediateky to the Italy invasion . We went to Anzio Beach last year to see the place; it was rough then .

Thanks to all the veterans.

The only good thing was my parents met while they did occupation duty in 1945 in Japan (Tokyo). My mother was on the first boat carrying civilians workers to relieve the US service personal in late October ... she and hometown friend had volunteered for Europe service and had 7 days to accept, pack and travel to NYC to go to Japan instead of waiting another 18-24 months for a European assignment. To be 25yo and leave home for the unknown.

My father was already there with the Army Quartermasters ,, an officer. In 1947, they met at a wedding and 3 months later, also got married. Both gone now, our house always had trinkets my mother collected and stories she told us of that time ... I guess that was a GREAT ADVENTURE for her after years and years of her war service at Great Lakes Naval Training Center.

Both are gone now ... I have her trinkets. My sister has her photos of Japan ... Tokyo was bombed into the cave man era .... block after block as far as the eye could see.

Thanks to all in that generation for their untold and seldom talked about service...few are still around.

Yessa!

Hear, hear! Tom Brokaw was absolutely correct in naming his 1998 book and the selfless U.S. citizens of that bygone era as "The Greatest Generation".

My late Dad was a 19 year old Marine when sent off to fight in the Pacific theatre. May God rest his soul and those of all the many others of his generation who proudly served and sacrificed in so many ways, literally "saving the world" at that point in history. Seldom did those survivors even speak of their sacrifices and experiences.
